Chapter 31

Billie

On the outskirts of New Orleans, the hotel we were staying at wasn’t the best in the area by any stretch of the imagination. Sadly for us, that didn’t mean it wasn’t just as pricey. One night, never mind multiple nights, would put a real dent in our budget. Hopefully once this whole business with the diamond smugglers was behind us, we’d be back in France and back to work.

Maybe get back to normal. Ares needed normal. We all did, in fact, which was something we hadn’t had since that fateful night all those years ago. My gaze traveled over the small room. Two queen beds. Our bags strewn about. Bare room. Living out of suitcases was getting old, and it wasn’t good for any of us.

Especially Ares. My gaze softened on his sleeping form. He was snoring softly, his one leg hanging off the bed. Raindrops pelted against the glass window, and for the hundredth time, I paced the entire length of the small room, waiting for Odette to return.

Where is she?

It shouldn’t take this long to go to the bank. Maybe getting a million-dollar loan took a lot of paperwork? She’d left when it was still daylight, and that was hours ago.

Guilt slithered through me. Yesterday, we thought we’d be free of smugglers after we returned the diamonds, but the joke was on us. Now they wanted a million dollars in interest. I couldn’t get a loan. I hadn’t had a real job since Ares was born. I mainly took care of him and took some odd, small jobs here and there—wedding dresses and custom designs and the like.

God, I hoped this plan worked, although a tiny voice in the back of my head was taunting me.

Ares shot up in the bed, pulling me out of my worries. He rubbed his eyes, turning his head left and right, confused. In the past six months, he’d often woken up in the middle of the night, not knowing where we were and worried about the unfamiliar surroundings.

“Maman? Aunt Billie?”

Not wasting any time, I rushed to him. “Shhh. Everything’s okay.”

He turned his head in my direction and opened his hands for a hug. I strode over and wrapped him in an embrace, murmuring comforting words. “I’m here.”

“Where’s Maman?” he asked sleepily. I was wondering the same thing, but I didn’t voice it. He didn’t need to worry about any more shit than he already was.

“She’ll be back soon,” I assured him softly.

“I don’t like it here, Aunt Billie.” My heart clenched. I was solely responsible for this clusterfuck, and I felt so goddamn helpless. I should be the one fixing it, not having Odette roaming from bank to bank. Yet, here we were.

“I know, buddy,” I whispered. “We’ll be leaving soon. Just wait until we’re back where Maman and I grew up. You’re going to love it.”

He didn’t respond, instead just tugged on my arm. “Can you stay with me and tell me a story?”

I knew that translated to “can you lie with me until I fall asleep?” and I sighed, unable to refuse him.
