“Do you think they’ll care if I have two pictures of the same building?” Mal asks without turning around.

“I have no idea,” I reply honestly. She nods like that answers her question and continues to stare at the collection of photos she has taped to a rolling pinboard in the Photography Department. She asked me to come with her today because the school is having a photo showcase next month and they’re allowing a few freshmen to submit a collection to be included. She wants me to help her pick the photos she’s including in her portfolio, but I don’t really know anything about photography. Not the way she does.

Mal is an artist through and through. She’s an architecture major and her sketches are stunning. She’s not big on ultra-modern architecture like most people entering the field, but rather restoring old buildings. It’s probably a consequence of growing up in Monteska because most of the buildings here are prewar and they look it.

She’s also an incredibly talented photographer, her passion for architecture overlapping because many of her photos are of old buildings.

The Photo Department is cool to be in. There are other students moving around the space doing their own things. It seems like this is a popular spot for people to just hang out. It’s in one of the newer buildings made to look old, and the room we’re in has a wall of industrial-style windows that look out into the commons where students are walking and biking by, or sitting at lunch tables outside.

Apparently, this is only half of the department. This is the half for digital photography, and the other half is across campus in a building that houses some of the other art majors and has dark rooms for developing film.

Mal does both types of photography, but she doesn’t shoot film nearly as much as she does digital, so when she’s not in class or at the dorm, she’s usually here. Even though photography isn’t her major, she’s already won the favor of the heads of the department so she’s been given extra privileges, like extra studio time.

Mainly, Mal shoots subjects that are a mixture of natural and manmade structures since she’s so fascinated by old buildings. She’s also really good at it. Somehow, she can include artistic shots of an old, crumbling building with a big neon sign in the front in the same collection as a photo of a wildflower field and make it work, and that’s what I’m looking at now.

She plucks a picture from the board and starts sorting through the stack on the table behind her. Her brows knit together and her lips screw up as she concentrates, her eyes flicking between a few photos. She eventually holds up two pictures to me. “Which one do you think is better?”

I raise my eyebrows. I could swear those are copies of the same exact picture. Okay, maybe one is a bit more zoomed in. “Uh, the right one?” She flips the photos back to herself and nods, taking my choice and adding it to her board.
