CHAPTER EIGHT

E

anraig Ditka sat in silence. What he feared most was happening. The messenger came early, so his day had started with bad news. It seemed like the laird of the south had finally decided to take action about the destruction of villages in his territory.

Eanraig knew the message he’d received could be fake and a plot to lure the lairds of each territory into an ambush, but the probability of it being real was high. The laird of the south was not a reliable man, but he also knew that the man was not power-hungry. He could not properly manage the vast area he was governing, so there was no need for him to want more. The best bet was that the message was true. Regardless, they would all have to take massive precautions if they did not want to suffer mass casualties. He sighed. Thinking made his head hurt, and he hated it. The only way to get clear answers to his questions was to attend the gathering and make investigations. It was scheduled to be held in a week, and he was sure it was more than enough time to make the right preparations.

Eanraig sent for Angus and Barclay to meet him in his study. It was difficult to think alone. The elders of the council would be informed later in the day after he finished deliberations with his two most trusted aides. The duo arrived not long afterward. After reading the contents of the letter, they faced Eanraig. “This coods be a trap,” Barclay said.

Eanraig sighed. “Ah ken, but we dinnae hae much choice.”

“Sire, Ah suggest ye send me in yer stead. It woods nae be best for ye tae leave the territory noo,” Angus offered.

“That is why ye are staying behind.”

“Sire?”

“It is nae up for argument, Angus. It woods be an insult if Ah dinnae show up and the other lairds do.”

“Then Ah will go wit ye.”

“Nae. Someone has tae be haur to keep an eye on things. Ah will feel safer if ye stayed.”

Angus wanted to protest, but Eanraig was right. They were the two strongest fighters in the town, and it would be disastrous if an attack happened when both of them were away.

“Barclay, ye woods gae wit me. Ah need ye to assess th’ situation of things there.”

Barclay bowed his head in agreement. “If th’ laird agrees to wit it, coods my son come wit? He is a smart boy, and as ye can see, Ah am getting old. He coods see something we miss.”

“Tis nae problem,” Eanraig said. “Angus, work with Barclay before we leave. Set up strategies fur an attack. Ensure we are covered on all sides. We leave town in three days.”

“Yes, sire,” Angus replied and the two aides excused themselves, leaving Eanraig alone again. That will take care of things for a while, Eanraig thought. If they left for the south three days from then, they would get there on time for the gathering with time to spare.

“Da, take me with ye,” a voice said, startling him slightly.
