Chapter Twelve

It was extremely obvious that Beau and Glenn didn’t like one another. Jake tried his best to get Beau to leave the table, but Beau made it clear that as long as Glenn was there, he was staying put.

During the meal, the conversation was limited to a big storm that was brewing in the Pacific and heading their way. She knew Jake was upset about Beau being there, but she was thankful he’d stayed instead of heading to the bar to have dinner alone.

Already, she felt closer to Beau than she felt for anyone else at the table, and she had worked with Jake for several years.

Beau seemed more at ease the longer the dinner dragged on. When the table was cleared of dishes, Jake cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention.

“Beau, I know you’re chartering my crew off island each day, but this next part doesn’t really concern you. We certainly don’t want to keep you longer than we have to,” he said clearly.

Beau smiled and looked towards Nicky for instruction. She nodded and said, “I’ll meet you at the bar and we can walk back to the docks together.”

Beau nodded before saying his farewells and heading to the bar.

“Together?” Jake asked.

“Nicky’s staying on the boat. Someone broke into her bungalow last night and trashed the place,” Gordy supplied.

“Oh, how horrible,” Jake said dryly, and Nicky felt a shiver race up her spine. “I guess there was a downside to staying in a bungalow.”

“Right.” She nodded, feeling her back teeth grind together.

There was a moment of silence and then Jake turned to Glenn. “You have the floor.”

“Thank you.” Glenn turned to them, his eyes landing on Nicky. “I believe that what your team is doing here is of interest to me. I’ve hired a professional team to take over for you.”

At this point, Gordy jumped in, “This is our story.”

Nicky felt her temper rise slightly but knew that there was probably nothing she could do to change Jake’s mind. If he’d given up the story, there was little to nothing she could do.

“Oh, it’s still your story,” Glenn said with a smile. “Only you’ll be telling it, not living it. The team I’ve hired is one of the best, and you’ll be filming them the entire time. The story is yours. The treasure is mine.” His eyes locked on Nicky.

The man hadn’t taken his eyes off her the entire time he’d talked, and it was making her skin crawl.

Then Glenn turned to Jake and a look passed between them. It was obvious to her journalistic eyes that the men had a side bargain in play.

Nicky wondered what kind of deal the men had made and why. Why had Jake given up any information about the treasure hunt in the first place? True, her team was seriously under-skilled. Hell, she’d wondered from the start why he’d dragged them all the way to Hawaii. But then the pieces had started falling into place. The blonde, the lack of a real contact.
