Chapter 5

As Myles drove out of the alley onto the street, all he could think about was getting far away from Amery as fast as possible.

How could he have done that? A cop. Was he insane? How does he know that the damned detective doesn’t think we’re the killers? He could be playing games with us. After all, he is a cop. That’s what they do. Try to trick a suspect into giving something away. What’s worse is, Amery got a look at that file and didn’t even bother to let me know what he’d learned. Like telling me didn’t matter.

He knew that wasn’t really the truth. Amery had called, but as Myles had told the detective, he’d been too busy with a customer to talk. He hadn’t even given Amery time to mention that he’d hacked into the police files. Which he promised he wasn’t going to do in the first place. Another reason I’m fucking pissed at him.

But what hurt most, and he knew it, was the fact the detective had been in a relationship with Amery. Tall, blond, sexy as hell and definitely aware that he’d got what it takes to have any man he wants. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, because I’m jealous. He was jealous and he knew it.

He was so wrapped up in his thoughts he almost ran a red light on Broadway, slamming on the brakes at the last second. When he saw a squad car cross the intersection, he realized how close he’d come to being arrested, or worse. As soon as the light changed, he carefully crossed the intersection then drove down a block to park in front of a row house. His hands were shaking as he turned the car off before resting his head against the steering wheel.

“I’m jealous, and frightened,” he whispered. He wasn’t certain which was worse, his fear of what might happen if the detective did figure out why he and Amery had been in the neighborhood around the time the Newells had been killed—or the fact his actions tonight might have lost him the man he loved with all his heart.

I let my jealousy get the better of me, and for no reason. The bastard was pushing buttons. Probably because he was pissed that he had to come interview us when he knew he’d be talking to Amery. If Amery walked out of their relationship…Yeah, if I was the detective, I’d be upset too. I blew everything out of proportion because I was scared. Scared of losing Amery, scared of being arrested…just fucking scared, period.

“I have to go home. I have to apologize for being a fool, because that’s what I am—a fool not to realize that Amery loves me and only me and has almost since the day we met. He loves me as much as I love him. God, I hope I haven’t destroyed that.” He hadn’t realized he’d been crying until he felt tears on his cheeks and wiped them away.

Starting the car,
