It felt strange to see Zach get into her car and smile at her before putting on his seatbelt. She appreciated him offering to come along and share his expertise on bikes, but she hadn’t really expected him to do so. It was something he’d mentioned only casually—‘Oh, I’ll help you, if you like.’ She’d never thought he actually would.

Edward had used to do that.

‘I’ll help you clear out that room. Don’t want you throwing something important away.’ Or, ‘I can go shopping with you if you like.’

But when the time came he’d always be too busy, or he would have made other plans, or he’d say he was too tired and he just wanted to relax and could they do it later?

‘Which shop are we going to?’ asked Zach.

‘I thought the one in Cherringham.’

‘Chrissie’s Bike Shop?’

‘That’s the one.’

‘I know it well. I got mine from there.’

She began to drive through Greenbeck, past the village green, over the Wishing Bridge, and then up the hill that would take them past the castle. Cherringham wasn’t far. About a fifteen-minute drive. And Chrissie’s Bike Shop sat in the centre of the small town, open that night until eight o’clock.

‘Any news on Marvin?’ she asked.

‘Yeah, looks like he’s developed quite an infection. They’ve put him on intravenous antibiotics to help get rid of it.’

‘Poor guy. And your foster father? How’s he doing since his chemo?’

‘Yeah, good... He’s had a couple of difficult days, but Evelyn said he was doing much better today.’

‘That’s good news. What are you doing with Rebel whilst you’re at work?’

He laughed. ‘Can you keep a secret?’

‘Of course!’

‘I brought him to work today. Settled him down in the old bike shelter behind the surgery, with a blanket, some toys and a bowl of water, and popped out in between patients to give him a quick cuddle and a toilet break.’

She laughed. ‘That’s why I saw you out the back! For a minute there I thought I was going mad. But that was you in the woods?’

Zach grinned. ‘Yes. Don’t tell Lucy. You’ll get me in trouble.’

‘Hardly. You’re the senior partner.’

‘But Lucy’s the practice manager and she used to be a nurse—you never mess with a nurse.’

‘You’d better believe it!’ She laughed with him, enjoying the fact that she was sharing his secret. ‘Was Rebel all right?’

‘He was fine! He was in the shade all day, and I took him food and snacks and toys...we had a walk. I think he enjoyed himself.’

‘You love having a dog, don’t you?’ she asked softly.

He nodded. ‘I do. I want Marvin to be better, but I’m really not looking forward to handing that dog back when he is.’

‘I get that...’

They drove on in companionable silence for a little while as the traffic got busier heading into Cherringham. They got stuck behind a learner driver for a while, who stalled the vehicle at traffic lights, but they were in no rush so neither of them was bothered.

After finding a parking space in the town centre, they began their short walk to the bike shop.
