Regina

The door shut with force, startling Regina. Her eyes shut in a silent prayer; even though she was uncertain God was on her side. Why did it have to be this hard?

“Daddy!” Maddison’s excitement echoed throughout the living room, causing Regina to part her lids; the liquid from the bubble wand dripping down onto her fingertips.

“Hey ya, Munchkin.” Harrison’s voice didn’t sound as chipper as when he usually gave Maddie the greeting. But Regina still admired him giving it as he picked her up, delivering a big pucker to her chubby cheek. Like her, he was attempting to keep the falsehood of happiness for their child.

“Harrison.”

He walked past Regina like he’d done for the past three days. Like she was vapor.

Day One she was thankful they could coexist without chaos, so she left it alone. Day Two she was giving him the space he deserved. But now it was Day Three and Ray had moved the last of his things out of his and Charisma’s loft. He was staying at one of Dice’s properties – The Avalon in Edgewater. And although he wasn’t pushy, Regina was getting the when you gonna shit vibe from him.

Not necessarily about her moving out herself, but just some plan of action on her part. Because Ray had copped a squat on that pot and handled his business.

However divorce – a real one – with children; it was more complicated.

“You hungry, Munchkin?”

“No…me and Mommy had sammiches. Put me down, Daddy... I wanna finish bubbles.”

When he did, Maddie flew back into the living room ready for more fun but Regina stood from the carpet, prepared to tackle another obstacle.

“Baby, can you go in your room and draw a nice picture for Mommy?”

“What kind of a picture, Mommy?”

“Surprise me. I’ll be in a little bit to see it, okay?”

Maddie nodded to Regina’s dispiritedness, as her obedient sweet self. When the little feet had stopped tapping on the carpet and she saw the light from Maddie’s bedroom flip on, Regina called out to her estranged husband.

“Harrison, can we… Can we please talk?”

She heard the fridge open and pots clicking. He had likely taken out leftovers. Regina had smothered chicken the day before out of guilt. Cooked up rice and spinach because Harrison liked to mix the two together.

A few moments later, she heard the start of the microwave. She followed the sound.

“Ba- Harrison.”

Almost called him babe out of habit. Which was 95% of their marriage. Repetition of actions out of habit.

She rounded the corner to the kitchen but lingered at the doorway.

“Harrison. Can we please discuss this?”

“Discuss what, Gina?” His tone was eerily calm as he removed a plate from the cupboard.

“Discuss what we…last discussed.” Regina realized how silly it sounded. She hugged herself because no one was there to do it.

“Telling Maddie? Telling your parents? Which one of us will stay here-”

“I’m not going anywhere.” He removed a knife and fork from the utensil drawer with too much decorum and Regina sucked in a deep breath.

What did she expect? He was hurt and well in his right.
