The pounding on the front door smacked Justice from a peaceful sleep. The waking where the heart gets trapped in the chest, eyes wide, and panic races through the body for a delirious second.

He slid off the couch trying to gather his senses. Sage snoozed beside him, still with a serene innocence.

More hammering as he neared the foyer, paced walking even though his visitor seemed to be anything but calm.

The knocking was so panicked he didn’t even pull the curtain back to glance who it was.

“Mary.”

“Justice. Justice…please tell me Grace isn’t at the church.”

Mind-fogged, his eyes bounced from the black streets, slick with sleety rain, to gathered snow on his lawn and hedges.

“What?” Finally looking to Mary, it seemed she’d been crying. Her nose and eyes matched bloodshot red. “What time is it?”

When he was truly sleep-drunk, he didn’t always ask the right things at the right times.

“Is Grace at the church?” Mary, his usually jolly, soccer-mom neighbor, bellowed out and Justice’s chest tightened as reality crept in by pixels.

“Wha- Why? What’s wrong? What’s…?” Justice glanced to his empty driveway. His heart rose up to his throat and choked him.

“It’s…it’s so bad Justice…” She blubbered and his petrified eyes under crumpled brows crept to her. “There’s…cops everywhere. There were…” Mary sniffled and Justice felt the heaving of his chest. “There were so many shots.”

Not feeling the cold air anymore, not feeling anything, Justice waited for more, or waited to wake.

“They don’t know if anyone’s alive.”
