“Falcon 2, do you copy?” Quinn’s voice cut in and out with the static.

“Copy, Falcon 1. Do you have an update?” Josh held Tempest’s gaze as he waited for a response. It had been over an hour since they’d heard anything. From experience that didn’t bode well, but he wasn’t going to worry Tempest.

She checked the video feed then came back to the couch and sat next to him. Waiting was the worst part, and tension radiated from her as she clasped her hands in her lap, her fingers resting on the gold ring.

“You and Falcon 6 are to remain where you are. The packages are to be delivered to the EXFIL. After delivery confirmation, you’ll have company. Falcon 1 out.”

Josh had expected something like this. The rescue of the aid workers would always come first. Mission first always. “Clear copy, Falcon 1.”

“Good luck, Falcon 2,” Quinn replied.

He’d been in similar situations plenty of times over the years. They just had to hope their luck held and nothing changed until the team showed up.

“How bad is it?” Tempest asked.

“Nothing I hadn’t expected.”

The building rocked with the force of an explosion. Dust rained down from the ceiling, and one of the fluorescent lights came loose and hung from wires over the reception desk.

“Fuck. What the hell was that?” Josh reached for Tempest. “Are you okay?”

When she nodded, he rose and strode across the room to check the video feed. Tempest followed him. What had those assholes done? They were lucky to still be breathing.

The ground shook a second time, and the lights flickered. Tempest lost her balance, but Josh caught her before she fell.

“What the hell is going on?” Her voice was higher pitched than usual. “Südas. Nothing but static. the camera might have been damaged in the blast.”

“See if you can reboot it.” Josh didn’t want to think about losing the feed,. They had some idea what was happening outside of the cement box they were stuck in.

Tempest pushed some buttons, and the screen went black. When the spinning green circle showed up, Josh sighed with relief. The force of the explosion worried him. The lab had withstood countless bombings over the years, so what had changed?

Another explosion sent pieces of the light ballast falling to the floor.

“This building is supposed to be virtually bomb proof.” Tempest tapped her index finger on the desk next to the keyboard controls for the camera feed.

“Maybe the virtually wore off?” It wasn’t very funny, but Josh wasn’t averse to saying anything to lighten the mood. If the building was going to blow up or collapse on top of them, there wasn’t a damn thing they could do to stop it.

“Umm, sure we can go with that.” Tempest rolled her eyes at him.

The camera came back online.

“Oh no,” Tempest exclaimed.

Josh winced as he focused on the feed. There was dust and a ton of debris with a couple of the insurgents’ legs sticking out from beneath it.

Since the door was still standing, the tangos hadn’t been the ones to cause the explosions.
