Chapter 12

Alexander

The deck was cleared, and rope had been strung along the gaps in the railing. Most of the crew was below deck, going through the cargo and securing what could be saved. As Hannah had pointed out, despite the broken masts and railing, the ship was in fairly good shape. But they were dead in the water, and their only chance of surviving would be another ship arriving.

“You okay?” Declan asked behind him. Hannah had managed to dig out the piece of wood lodged in Declan’s shoulder and patch him up. The wood had ripped muscles, and Hannah had declared that he needed to keep the arm in a sling for at least a few weeks to give it time to heal. Declan still looked pissed about it.

“Yeah, just tired.” The leviathan had attacked at dawn, and now the sun was setting. His body hurt, and he was pretty sure his left side was one big bruise though he wasn’t sure when he had been hurt.

“How’s she doing?” he asked with a nod towards Hannah. She was helping untangle the rigging and ropes, but her face was set in hard lines, and she didn’t look at any of the men she was working with.

“I’m not sure,” Declan said and stepped so close Alexander could feel Declan’s warmth against his back. “I think she’s scared the crew will hate her.”

“Do they?”

“A few might. Some are a bit scared, I think. Most are just amazed that she saved us all.”

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“Are you scared of her?”

Declan frowned as he thought about it, and Alexander wanted to reach up and smooth out the wrinkle between his brows.

“Not scared of her. More awed over her power. And scared that it’ll be spoken about off this ship.”

Alexander nodded in agreement. If word about Hannah’s power reached the wrong ears, she would be hunted to the ends of the world. Some would want to use her for personal gain, and others would fear her and want to destroy her.

“We’ll keep her safe.” Declan’s voice was deep and growly, and Alexander couldn’t help the small smile. He liked Declan all growly.

“Now we just need to convince her that that’s how we feel.” Alexander wasn’t sure how hard that would be. She had done her best to keep her distance from them during the day, and Alexander was pretty sure she was afraid of what their reaction might be.

“Has the new guard schedule been set up?” Declan asked.

“Stokley’s taken care of it.” Since they were dead in the water, they had no need for a full crew on deck. Stokley had divided the crew into smaller groups, each taking two-hour shifts. They were lucky the cabins and crew quarters had survived, though plenty of things had been destroyed too.

“Let’s call it a day,” Alexander said as Declan leaned against him. He had tried to get Declan to rest multiple times during the day, but the man was too stubborn for his own good.

It would be too dangerous to try and work in the waning darkness anyway, and everyone was stumbling tired.
