Chapter 13

~ New Year’s Eve ~

Dylan

“Five… Four… Three… Two… One… Happy New Year!” We shouted along with the crowd at Times Square as we watched the glimmering ball drop. Sliding my arm around Maya’s waist, I pulled her up and into my arms. She immediately wrapped her legs around my waist and slid her arms over my shoulder as she looked down at me laughing with a gleam in her eyes so endearing that it tugged at my heartstrings. This was the first time since I’d arrived here a week ago that I’d seen her completely carefree aside from in the bedroom.

“Happy New Year!” Sliding my free hand to the back of her head, I urged her mouth down to mine. As our lips connected and she pressed her body tight to mine, I immediately felt a jolt, both in my heart and in my dick. It was only a week – a week and I was falling hard for this woman. It didn’t even seem possible in such a short period of time, but it was happening. Though we had a past together, it had been a long time ago, but it felt like those years had washed away and we were as close as we’d ever been back then, but this time there were no barriers to come between us. I wasn’t the ignorant, selfish young man I once was, and I was more than willing to be the man she wanted and needed me to be now.

“Happy New Year,” she gasped smiling down at me, keeping her legs tightly wrapped around me. “It’s a new year and a fresh start on life.”

“It is,” I agreed, moving my hands again so they were both grabbing her ass, helping to support her weight on my hips, I wasn’t ready to let her go yet. “Which brings me to something I’d like to talk to you about.”

The grin slowly faded from her lips, and she loosened her leg’s grip around my waist, slowly sliding down my body.

“No, no… I’m not sure what’s going through that beautiful little head of yours, but whatever it is, back it up. You haven’t even heard my proposal.”

“How do you know what I’m thinking?” She pulled her knit hat lower onto her forehead until it covered her eyebrows.

“Because I think we have something very special. And your smile faded way too quickly.” Reaching out to her, I ran the back of my gloved hand down her cold, rosy cheek.

She closed her eyes and seemed to bask in my touch for a moment before backing away. “Then, what’s on your mind?”

“Let’s get out of the chaos so we can talk.” Taking her hand, I led her through the maze of drunk and exuberant people. It was midnight and below freezing temperatures but there were toddlers and babies out with their parents in full celebration. This place and the energy were infectious. I hated to leave, but what I wanted to talk about had been on my mind all day.
