Chapter Nine
Several days passed, and the winter storm dissipated. It wouldnât be long before the Sutherlands returned. Something Heather couldnât wait to get behind her. She hated how awkward it was going to be, and she still wasnât convinced there wasnât going to be some sort of punishment for breaking into their home. But what worried her more were the dreams.
Since that first night, sheâd had them over and over, but not once could she remember any details. Sometimes sheâd wake up with tears streaming down her face, and once or twice in Erinâs arms. She was beginning to think he should just move into her bed.
âBad idea,â she muttered, setting a roast in the oven. Well, not a bad idea, but not a healthy one, thatâs for sure.
Her attraction to him grew with every passing moment. The heat between them was about to cause one major meltdown. Sheâd not stopped the couch cuddling in front of the television; she enjoyed it too much. And the tender touches and sizzling looks throughout the day were impossible to ignore. She really needed to put some distance between them, but all she wanted was to crawl inside his skin.
âI should probably go stand out in the snow to cool off.â She let out a deprecating chuckle. Sheâd probably catch pneumonia and die. âProblem solved,â she muttered.
âWhat problem?â Erin said, as he strolled into the kitchen.
âNothing. No problem. Just ignore me.â
âOch, lass, that is an impossibility,â he said, with a wink. âBut Iâve come to help you with supper. Tell me what I can do.â
She propped one hand on her hip and grinned. âYou want to help cook?â
âAye, âtis noâ fair that youâve done all the work while the lad and Iâve done aught but enjoy it.â
âOkay.â Although she knew it was a bad idea to work in close proximity to him, she couldnât stop herself. âYou could spoon out the inside of those cooked potatoes into that bowl while not destroying the skins.â
With a grin he started in his work, and she did her best not to watch how the muscles in his arms flexed as he scooped out the steaming centers.
âWhat are your plans for this?â he asked.
âIâm making twice smashed potatoes. We add lots of good stuff to the guts and then put it back into the skins and bake them.â
âThat doesna sound too difficult, but verra tasty.â
âAye, laddie, that it is,â she said, with a laugh.
Erin chuckled at her attempts at an accent. He found it odd how she sounded of home in her sleep, but the words were strained when awake.
âYou okay?â she asked. âYouâre scowling at our dinner. Not a good sign.â
âNay, I am fine.â
âHey, you donât have to do this. Iâm fine with the cooking. Iâve been loving it, actually. I never get to cook for other people. Itâs usually just me.â
âI want to do this. Truly. I was just thinking ofâof home.â Although a rather large stretch of the truth, the Highlands and the sound of its people were home.
