CHAPTER NINETEEN

THE AIR HUNG heavy with tension as I muttered, “Dammit, Ava.” Frustration boiling in my veins. A sea of hotels loomed before me as I scoured each one, hunting for her. She left only a whisper of a trail, using cash to hide her whereabouts, but I still clawed up her name, registered to a hotel downtown. By the time I raced there, she had vanished, leaving me grasping at her shadow. Now I’m perched in this cramped coffee shop, eyes glued to my laptop. Every sense homed in to find her next stopping point. To top it all, Ava had silenced her phone.

I should have seen this coming, should have embedded a secret tracker. This city can be dangerous, it’s claws sharp; it’s no place for her to be alone. Crime slithers through the streets. I know Ava thinks she can disappear here, fade into the background, but she’s like a flame in the dark. Her beauty would draw eyes, draw attention.

A sudden ping tore through my focus, signaling Ava withdrawing cash. I snagged the location and bolted to my bike, throttling it into the suffocating congestion of Pittsburgh. The bigger city choked me with its throngs of cars and people. A quieter part of town loomed in front of me, the bank Ava used up ahead. But of her, there was no trace. Darkness fell, and I checked into a hotel and continued the search on foot.

Each step was cautious, my hand gripping my piece in my jacket, ready to draw at the hint of danger. Just as I was about to give up, there she was—Ava, fleeing into an alley with a man on her heels. My feet were a blur on the pavement, my heart a wild drum in my chest. The alley was silent, opening onto another street. I scoured left and right, then a scream cut through the air, pointing me right.

“I got you, bitch, and you’ll regret making me chase you,” his voice was a harsh whisper, dragging a limp Ava with him. Rage twisted inside me, a roar tearing from my throat as I confronted him, gun aimed. “Lay her down, gently!”

“Who the hell are you?” he spat, easing Ava to the ground. My demand was fierce. “What did you do to her?” His defiance was a spark against my powder keg, but my cocked gun cooled him. “Alright, alright! I just sedated her.” He didn’t see the blow coming; my gun’s butt ensured his silence. I searched his pockets, grabbing his wallet. I couldn’t deal with him now, but he wasn’t off the hook.

With Ava in my arms, I started back for the hotel, holding her close so we looked like lovers so we wouldn’t draw attention. Fortune had smiled on Ava tonight; if I hadn’t been there, who knows what the fucking creep would have done. She was coming back with me tomorrow if I had to tie her to me.

Back at the hotel, I laid Ava on the bed, removing her shoes.
