Zeke

The morning was freezing. Usually, I’d have rested in bed for a good ten minutes before braving the cold, but I found my legs swinging outside the comfort of my duvet almost the moment the alarm woke me. Was I just getting it over with? Or . . . no. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. Today was the day I’d show Gabriel the summit and the magic of the mountain inside.

My phone rang, and I saw Gabriel’s number. He must be checking if I was on my way. Damn guy had no patience. Didn’t he realize me getting up at this time was practically a miracle?

I slammed accept and answered, “What?”

“Good morning, Zeke. Are you ready for our morning walk up the mountain?”

“It’s not even six yet.” But I felt myself softening even so. Gabriel was in a good mood. He wasn’t trying to nag me.

I changed quickly, shoved my feet into my boots, and hauled ass over to the RV we’d let the sorcerer use. He was already waiting on the front step. That damned spell book was in his hands, which put me on edge. Why would he need a spell book to study?

The moment he saw me, he was on his feet and walking up the mountain. No rest for the wicked.

“Hold on a sec.”

He paused, and I closed the gap, then snatched at his spell book. He held on tight, but I dug in, using my wolf strength.

“What are you doing, Zeke? This is part of the plan.”

I frowned, my head pounding. That didn’t make sense. My wolf yipped, agreeing. “You want to study the mountain’s magic, not use your spells on it. Your book will be safe in your RV. Lock it up.”

His lips thinned. “I have spells to compare your magic to.”

“Then take notes. No spell book.” The pain in my head increased. I rubbed my temple and glared at the sorcerer. “Get rid of it now, or we’re not going.”

He huffed but did as he was told. He was back at my side in seconds. “Good to go now?” he asked, showing me the contents of his backpack before zipping it back up.

I nodded, and we set off. It was still pitch black, so I used my torch to guide us in the quiet of pre-dawn. Everyone except the patrol would be fast asleep, and even they watched us leave in silence. I’d already warned them to give us space.

Gabriel didn’t talk during the walk, and I didn’t offer any conversation. I was too busy wondering if his study of the mountain would take up all my time today, because I didn’t want to leave him unattended. My head wanted to be there in case he needed anything, but my wolf’s fur bristled like he was a threat who needed to be watched.

Why was I so confused about him? I rubbed my face, my wolf telling me something about this trip was wrong, twisted, but I couldn’t think through the fogginess in my head.
