Crescent Cemetery. Marigny.

Misty held Luke’s hand as they walked towards Leo’s freshly dug grave. A cold drizzle had begun to fall, and the chill of it was sinking into her bones. Luke was worried. She felt it bleeding off him in waves and saw it in his eyes every time he looked at her. He’d been watching her since their conversation about pregnancy earlier that day. He was happy with the idea but terrified too.

She understood his fear. He’d already lost his wife and child. She doubted he would survive losing another. If she was pregnant, he would guard her and their child with his life. He would fight to never let anything happen to them.

Her mother opened a big, black umbrella, and Misty crowded underneath. “Let’s see if Daddy notices anything at the gravesite. He’s dynamite in cemeteries and funeral homes.”

“Thank you, child,” her father said. “It’s good to know I’m still dynamite in one area, at least.”

Claire giggled at her dead husband.

Misty rolled her eyes.

The crowd of mourners assembled around the open grave was large and growing larger as they approached. Misty wanted to touch the casket one more time to see if Leo might reach out to her. His spirit should be incensed at being eliminated before the Fates had destined his time to depart. Leo should be shouting at the top of his dead lungs for justice.

“I need to get closer,” she whispered to Luke.

“Casey, take Misty’s arm on that side and protect her from the crowd. We have to get closer.”

Casey let go of Diana and helped clear a path for Misty to reach the coffin.

“Gather closer, friends, and relatives.” The minister began the interment service with a long prayer, and Misty had to put her plan on hold for a few minutes. While she waited for an opportunity, she focused on the crowd and blinked twice when she saw Leo manifest himself above the head of Gisele Thibodeau, the magazine editor.

Misty turned to Claire and whispered, “See that, Mother?”

“Yes, I do. Who is that woman?”

“His boss, the editor of the food magazine.”

“Leo is telling us something,” said Claire. “He’s singling her out for a reason.”
