Return to AR 5 and continue south for 2 miles to Norfork. One of the oldest settlements in Arkansas, the town was founded at the junction of the North Fork and White Rivers during the riverboat days. Because of the shoals and rapids where the two rivers joined, only flat-bottomed boats could navigate beyond that point. Although steamboats could later ascend the White River to Forsyth, Missouri, Norfolk remained the normal unloading point. From here, loads of salt and other goods were freighted over the “Old Salt Road,” which led northwest along the White River to Branson, and then north to Springfield.

In Norfork, the Jacob Wolf House, which is along AR 5, was built in 1829 and is the oldest public structure in Arkansas. Named for Major Jacob Wolf, the owner and builder, it served as the county courthouse for what was then Izard County. Interpretive signs explain the history of the area. (See Appendix A, Attractions for more information.) Just before the Jacob Wolf House, Fisherman’s Street leads down the hill to the Norfork Access to the White River. This provides you with an opportunity to see the river firsthand.
