CHAPTER THIRTEEN

RHEA

I FORCED US STRAIGHT TOWARD land, ignoring the sound of Eli returning shots, focusing only on getting out of range of their weapons. But they had heavier ammunition than I’d originally seen. Eli shouted before I saw the smoke trail. “RPG. Right side!”

On instinct I banked the helicopter as hard as the bird could take left and climbed in altitude. It missed us, but not by much. If I hadn’t banked, we’d be in pieces under the ocean right about now.

“Fuck, Ace. Get us out of here.”

“I am. Hang on. We’re taking it straight over the forest, then flying over the eastern mountains.” I wasn’t sure if the helicopter had been hit anywhere, and I didn’t have confidence it could climb the altitude of the southern mountains even if my instruments said we were fine. I flew the shortest path back to command, staying as low as possible. I continued to check for signs of rotor malfunction. My fuel gauge, my altitude, both, said we were fine.

But I didn’t trust them.

I buried every reaction, every emotion, deep within me, until Eli was safe and we were on the ground. “Eli, are you hit?”

“No. I’m good. I’d prefer to end the day without being a fireball in the sky, though.”

“We share similar perspectives.”

Eli kept the tension low, cracking jokes until we landed. As soon as we touched the ground in front of the warehouse, I unbuckled my belt and started inspecting him for injuries. I pulled at his armored vest, then checked his face and neck, and down his arms. “Are you sure you weren’t hit?” I smoothed my hands over his thighs. “Your legs are good?”

“Stop mother henning me.” Eli chuckled. “That’s my job.” Eli stopped laughing, and I felt him go stiff under my hands.

“What’s wrong? What hurts?”

“That was way too close.” I followed his eyes. They weren’t on the bullet hole in the windshield, but the one directly beside my head, lodged into the side of my seat. It had come from the back right side of the helicopter and cut up almost into the cockpit. Almost into my skull.

This was a first. I’d been shot at, and it was my fault. All my fault. “I’m sorry, Eli. I should’ve—”

Large, callused hands wrapped around my arms and hauled me from Eli’s lap, and I stared up into two furious blue eyes.

Oh, no. This is bad.

Reginn stalked toward the warehouse with his arms fastened tight around me. “You should’ve listened to Eli.” His rough voice sounded like sandpaper against stone. He opened the large metal door, slammed it, and engaged the lock, all while he carried me over his shoulder as if I was a sack of flour. He turned abruptly, sat me down on a cargo box, and waited for me to speak.

He did in fact appear not too thrilled to see me. This wasn’t the interaction I’d planned in my head upon first seeing him. This wasn’t the way it was supposed to go. I had an explanation for the night flights, but not for this.
