CHAPTER FIFTEEN

JACKSON

This job feels different from all the other ones.

I’m still providing private security to a group of extremely wealthy people. CEOs, CFOs, philanthropists, private equity traders, and even a countess, if I heard correctly. As part of the security team at this charity fundraiser, I’m tasked with putting my safety on the line for theirs.

So that part is the same. But the rest of it?

Not so much.

This time, my team takes professionalism and competence to another level.

There’s the heightened alertness, gazes constantly sweeping across the crowded room, searching for the first sign of a threat. Everyone standing at full attention, muscles tensed and ready to move in an instant. Communication shared through slight nods and chin lifts; quick, pointed glances conveying silent messages. Our earpieces are nearly silent—they’re not necessary right now, because everyone is on the same page, completely on point.

I’ve worked with skilled men and women on my security jobs before—former military, law enforcement—but it always felt temporary. The people I’d work with would change from one week to the next, depending on who was available for a particular assignment.

Not this time. This team is a cohesive unit—not working as individuals but coming together as a true team, like the one I had when I was in the Army.

It’s not just the team I’m with either. Their purpose is different.

Sure, we’re getting paid well, but half of the profit isn’t going to us. It’s going toward helping Blade and Arrow clients; the ones who really need help and can’t afford it. The people who are the true beneficiaries of Blade and Arrow’s expertise, receiving assistance pro-bono; funded by jobs like these.

And the last part that’s different. For the first time in over six years, I’m working with Nora again.

Not transporting her team in my helo, under open fire and dodging RPGs.

But across the room from her, working alongside her team.

Cole called two days ago to ask if I’d consider helping out on this job. “I know it’s short notice,” he said apologetically. “I thought I’d go myself, but with Maya and the baby… I just don’t feel comfortable leaving the two of them alone just yet.”

Since their baby was born just the night before, I couldn’t blame him. Especially considering how protective Cole is of Maya, and his new daughter, Clara. “I don’t mind at all,” I told him. “I’m happy to help.”

“It’s not a long gig, maybe six hours total,” Cole explained, “and honestly, I don’t anticipate any problems. There haven’t been any credible threats against any of the attendees, and the hotel we’ll be in has an excellent security system. But I don’t want to go into it one man down. Not when I promised the client the full team.”

“And they won’t mind that I’m taking your place for it?”

“No. The makeup of the team is at my discretion. If I put you on the floor, there will be no question of you being there.” He paused. “I always respected you and the job you did, Jackson.
