Chapter 22

Cassie

As I lead Ryan upstairs, all I can think is—I cannot believe he’s here. Never, during the entire time we dated, has he ever done anything spontaneous like this. He doesn’t believe in grand romantic gestures. Yet here he is. I mean, he did come here for me, right? Why else would he be here? Is he going to try to win me back? Do I want him to?

I stop in front of the guest bedroom, open the door, and shine the flashlight into the room. Candles fill every available surface, but they remain unlit. I’d put them in here, just in case, and now I’m glad I did. I grab the lighter from the bedside table drawer and busy myself with lighting the candles.

Ryan sets his bag on the bed, then turns to face me. “Are you okay, Cassandra?”

I stop with the lighter mid-air and raise a brow. “Uh, yeah. Why?”

“Why?” He laughs incredulously. I used to think that laugh was endearing, but right now, the sound grates on my nerves. “I don’t know. Maybe because you wrecked your car, and then didn’t answer any of my calls.”

My eyes widen. “How do you know about my car?”

“I handle financial accounts for several of the local police officers, remember? When the call came in about your accident, one of the guys called me.” He approaches and rests his hands on my shoulders, squeezing gently. “You weren’t answering your phone. Becca had no idea what was going on. Hell, I even went so far as to try calling your brother.”

“You called Harland?” I can’t keep the shock out of my voice.

“I was worried sick about you,” Ryan says and pulls me into a hug.

I’m still so stunned that all I do is stand there, arms by my sides.

“I called every hospital in a fifty-mile radius, and you weren’t in any of them.” He pulls back and holds me out at arm’s length. “So, I decided to drive up here to see you, make sure you were okay.”

My mind spins with everything he’s saying. I never got any calls from him. Then again, I haven’t exactly been paying much attention to my phone. But I know the ringer is on, and the volume is all the way up. Maybe the storm has been messing with the signal? I shake the thought away, realizing none of that is important right now.

“Sorry,” I say with a frown. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I went off the road and lost control. Hit a tree. My brother actually came to help me.”

I leave out anything to do with the car that had been following me. Or the crazy guy who wants to kill me for some unknown reason. The less Ryan knows the safer he’ll be. I may not have a future with him, but I don’t want to see him harmed, either.

“I’m just glad you’re okay.” He leans forward and presses a kiss to my forehead.

Normally, I don’t mind when he does that, but tonight, everything about him, his touch, his presence, feels wrong.
