GRIMDAR

My people come out to greet their chieftain. They pour out of every hut and cave in the city to pay their respects, their fists pounding their chests to the rhythm of the war drums.

I help Quins climb out of the cart and hold her hand as I pull her through the crowd. She is clearly overwhelmed. My warriors spread the word of our honorable deeds as I make my way to the large tent in the center of our town.

A messenger is already waiting for me at the entrance to my tent. A chieftain’s work never ends.

“Chieftain! I have word from Dra-Albar and Vazzol-Ghog! They have already heard of your conversation with the warlock, and they are willing to join our union! Their chieftains request a meeting!”

“Tomorrow,” I growl. “I will deal with them tomorrow. Tonight, I rest. Do not bother me unless the city is on fire. Understood?”

“Yes, Chieftain!”

I open the flap and let Quins enter my tent. I close it behind us, and the raucous noise of the city is somewhat dimmed. I take a moment to admire the human female. Her skin is covered in a fine layer of sand, but still, she looks absolutely stunning. Tonight, I am all hers. Starting tomorrow, my duties will demand much of my time, but tonight… tonight, I am hers, and she is mine.

“What do you think of my home?” I ask.

“It’s not the warlock’s tower, that’s for sure,” she answers. “It’s very… rustic.”

She admires the hides and the bones that decorate my tent. “Yes. It is not like the warlock, who shuns nature, who destroys it. We orcs understand balance.”

Quins looks at me and raises an eyebrow. “Orcs? Balanced? That’s the first time I’ve heard those two words used together in a sentence.”

“You think us savages.”

“I know you are. There are skulls on top of your palisades, Grimdar. Skulls.”

“Yes. Those of our enemies.”

“You don’t think it barbaric?”

“We use every part of every kill. Attis demands it. Is that barbaric?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“I will show you the hot springs. Perhaps those will be more to your liking.”
