“I’ll need your wifi password,” Kelly announced once we arrived home. Per her request, we had doubled back to get a few things from her father’s house. I was reluctant, but she promised she would be fast, and that I needn’t get out of the car. As she’d run in, I’d kept an eye out for police.

It made sense that they would keep this area under surveillance, expecting—something. They, or the Behan Boys, working with Doyle. I realized I had no idea if the cops were aware of what had happened.

Ideally, they weren’t.

Doyle wasn’t exactly a model detective, if his years on the force and inability to rise in the ranks were any clue. It probably wasn’t unusual for him to disappear now and then, and his daughter was still keeping up appearances at school, wasn’t she?

Kelly had returned with a laptop, more clothes, a few textbooks, a few stuffed animals, a bag of toiletries, and, I realized with a certain amount of amusement, a stack of paperback romance novels.

“This is my guilty pleasure,” she’d admitted, piling them into the back seat of the car. I caught sight of one of the titles—The Highlander’s Secret Baby—and smirked at the shirtless Scotsmen on the cover, cradling an infant as his tartan blew in the highland breeze.

Once at the house, Kelly began to make her demands known.

“I need internet to do my homework and work on college essays. Also, if I stop replying to texts or commenting on people’s Instagrams, it’ll be obvious something is wrong, so it’s in your best interest.”

“That would also make it easier for you to let someone know what I’m doing to you.”

She rolled her eyes.

“You’re already letting me go to school, right? I could just let someone know then. This is way lower stakes.”

She had a point. I found myself grinning, in spite of myself. I appreciated how she thought things through.

“Next,” she said. “I don’t want to sleep in the basement. You have a guest room, right? I can be your prisoner in there just as easily as I can in the basement.”

“You’re my prisoner,” I replied. “Not my guest.”

“You can chain me up in the basement, if you want, but look—I’ll get sick if you make me sleep down there. Someone will notice and start asking questions. You don’t want that, do you?”

“Then I’d just stop you from leaving the house.”

“But you don’t want that.”

She was sitting at my kitchen counter, right where Kirill had been a few hours before, her laptop open. I leaned on the opposite side of the counter, our eyes meeting. I searched those soft blue orbs, hunting for a hint at the game she was playing.

“Why don’t I want that?” I asked, finally.

Now, she blushed.

“Well, if you’re a little nice to me, it’ll be easier for us to—you know. Have fun.”

I felt a grin broadening over my lips.

“You mean fuck.”

“I mean—have fun! If I get sick and starve, I’m not going to be very fun, am I? That’s why you’re keeping me, right? Because you want to have fun with me? Well, here, Mitya, Mr.
