Our Free Will
God has given us free will. This is His best gift to us, and He wants us to use it wisely and enjoy it. So, again, Satan envies us and tries to steal it from us. And he has been successful, leading many into captivity.
This, then, created a monstrous problem for God. What could He do to rescue His masterpiece? Should He simply write us off as He did with the angels who followed Satan? No, humans are too valuable for that. He must find a way to obey the rules but rescue His beloved humans.
God has established rules for His universe. And both we and He operate within those parameters. Among them are rules of authority in the spirit world. One of these is the rule that whoever we obey âownsâ us.
It was humans who gave the creation to Satan. By some rule we do not understand, it must be humans who win it back. According to the apostle Paul, âsince by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the deadâ (1 Corinthians 15:21).
Adam gave the universe away (see Luke 4:6), freely using his authority to represent humankind in giving his allegiance to Satan. To take it back, another Man must use His free will to represent humanity in obeying God. Whereas the first Adam chose Satan and gave the universe away, the last Adam, through freely choosing obedience to the Creator, took it back.
And He did it not as God but totally as a human. Jesus laid aside His prerogatives as God (see Philippians 2:6â7), becoming fully human. Though He was still fully God, He never once employed His deity. He lived as God had hoped Adam would, choosing to be totally dependent on Him, thereby defeating the enemy as a human being. As far as we know, only humans were offered salvationânot angels, not animals. Only those made in Godâs image. Only those beings whose humanity was substantial enough for God Himself in Jesus to enter.
What an amazing thing! What value God has attached to us! Far greater than any value He has attached to even the highest angels. We are precious, valuable to God, in a unique relationship with Godâin His eyes worth it.
We are valued above every other of Godâs creatures. For this reason we have been rescued from the punishment we deserve. That is who we are.
