Chapter Fourteen

A sharp body-wide pain was the first thing that registered in Sara’s mind the moment she began to awaken. It was only confirmed when she tried to sit up, and her stomach felt like it was on fire.

A soft voice and a gentle hand pushing her to lay back down had Sara trying to focus her blurry gaze on the unfamiliar face in front of her.

“Sara, I’m LAW Doctor Taniqa Carelsin.” The woman smiled kindly. “You’re on the LAW battlecruiser, Optimum Vengeance, commanded by Major Dar Vacanow. Your vision is still a little unfocused from your head injury, and the skin on your abdomen and legs is repairing very well, but you need a lot more rest.”

“Drek?” Sara’s voice cracked and sounded distant.

“Sara.” Kendi’s face came into view. “Drek is still on Forchania working to bring down the Consortium conspirators. You’re safe now and must rest.”

“With all your technology, you can’t help me to see clearer?” Sara complained to the doctor.

“Of course, there are lenses we can fit over your eyes to help clear up your vision. They can automatically adjust to the varying levels of your healing,” Dr. Carelsin said with a smile. “But, your vision should be fine in the next two days, and you should try to rest until then.”

Sara gently shook her head and ignoring the pain she forced herself into a sitting position. “Get me a computer and those lenses, please.”

“No, Sara, you have to rest and heal. Drek and Dar can handle it without you,” Kendi argued, proud of her courageous friend but frustrated at Sara’s lack of self-preservation.

“I will rest and heal while trying to help.” Sara wasn’t going to deterred. “Please, get me a computer and those lenses.”

When no moved to do as she asked, Sara swung her legs to the side of the bed and sucked in a sharp breath at the pain when her feet hit the floor.

“All right!” Dr. Carelsin held up her hands in surrender. “I’ll get you both, but please, get back in the bed.”

Kendi was helping her climb back in when Sara saw a flash of white in the corner of her eye.

“Precious?” the white flash bolted to Sara, and she dug her hands into the animal’s soft fur and nuzzled its face with her own. “I’m so glad you and Kendi are here with me.”

Kendi put a comforting hand on Sara’s shoulder when she heard her softly whispered words. “It’s going to be OK, Sara. Drek and Dar will put an end to this soon.”

“I want to help them make it happen.” Sara tried and failed to focus her gaze on her AI friend. “I can’t go back to Earth and fight. My only hope for a future lies with Forchania, and to be honest, I like it there.”

Dr. Carelsin had come back a few moments ago and helped Kendi get Sara back into the bed then handed her the lenses with self-adjusting headgear and a large tablet-sized computer.

“Sara, under the circumstances, LAW could find you another world if you would prefer it,” Dr.
