Chapter Twelve

When she reached the door, Asiah realized she was still wearing her bracelets. She removed them quickly; it wouldn’t do for her parents to see her with different colored eyes. As soon as the power stones left her veins she felt heavier, like a stone had been placed on each shoulder. Everything around her seemed to dim. It was a strange and unpleasant sensation.

Asiah entered the apartment to the silent stares of her parents. They had been giving her a bit of a wide berth since Chase left last night and she didn’t mind at all.

Mother didn’t like the uncomfortable silence. “Good day at work, dear?” she asked, which was her way of asking if Asiah had brought home any pay.

“Fine, Mother.” She didn’t feel like elaborating.

“Cricket! Your wrists!” Father noticed her puncture wounds before she had a chance to cover them up.

“Oh, it’s nothing. You know how it is working in a knife shop. I’ll just go get cleaned up.” She tried to make a dash for her bedroom, but Father caught her arm.

He turned her hands palms-up to examine her wrists. “How did you get these?” She had to admit that identical puncture wounds on the wrists didn’t exactly look good. She hoped he couldn’t tell how fast the wounds seemed to be healing.

She pulled her hands back. “They’re just scratches. Once I clean the blood away, I’ll be good as new.” She darted into her room before Father could stop her.

In her room she scrubbed the blood from her wrists. The wounds were now completely healed. There wasn’t even a scar left behind. She was amazed that something like that could happen. If she could learn to heal people like Chase could, she knew she could do a lot of good in the world. Maybe that was her true calling. Maybe it was a start, anyway.

Her mind raced as she tried to fall asleep that night. There was so much she wanted to know about herself, about her people, about Chase. She remembered what he’d taught her earlier about focusing her mind and used the technique to calm her nerves. It would be nice to have a full night’s sleep after the last few days.

In the morning, Asiah slipped out before her parents were awake. It was shortly after five. She knew Chase didn’t like to be woken early, but she would take his morning grouchiness over the awkward tension with her parents any day. She went to the alley nearest her building and walked to the far end, away from the sleeping vagrants. Yesterday was the first time she’d channeled alone, and it was surprisingly easy. Today she thought back to the path that had led her home. If she traveled in the opposite direction, it should take her back to Chase’s house.

She pulled the bracelets with the rough blue stones out of her pocket and fastened them into place with a click. She braced one hand against the wall as she rode the wave of adrenaline that surged through her body.
