Chapter 20

Tru

The moment Tahira walked into my house, I was happy to see her, yet I was mad at her. Why didn’t she tell me she was at Alohnzo’s this whole time? When I saw her car parked in Alohnzo’s garage, I felt hurt that she didn’t trust me enough to keep her secret. I didn’t know how to question Alohnzo about it, so I asked about Kinsley’s car instead.

“Tahira, what’s going on?”

“Hey, Tru . . . I’ll explain everything.”

She followed me to the kitchen where I was about to prepare lunch.

She sat on a bar stool and said, “I know you’re upset with me, but I didn’t want Luca to know where I was.”

“You really think I would’ve told Luca where you were?”

“No, I know you wouldn’t tell him, but you would tell your husband. Noble is too loyal to Luca to keep that secret to himself.”

She was right. My husband would go running anytime Luca would call him. He was a good friend like that.

“I get it, but I was hoping you would’ve at least called to let me know you were safe.”

“I’m sorry about that. You’re one of my dearest friends, Tru. I promise that I will never do that again.”

“Good,” I replied, feeling better. “You talk to Luca yet?”

“I went to talk to him before I came here.”

“How did that go?”

“Fuck him! I’m getting a divorce!”

“I understand better than anybody.... Hey, um, I saw your car in Alohnzo’s garage.”

“I know. I should’ve told you.”

“It’s okay. I understand why you would go to him, but you couldn’t think of anywhere else to park?” I chuckled, thinking of how silly that was. If she truly wanted to hide, she should’ve parked elsewhere.

“I was in such a hurry to get away from Luca, Tru. I didn’t think it all the way out.”

“I see.... Do you want anything to drink? Juice, water, or wine?”

“I’ll take some ice water with a lemon wedge if you have it.”

I went to the refrigerator and got a bottle of water. I cut a lemon and put it in the glass with the water. I set it in front of her and said, “Tahira, you’re a grown-ass woman, and I know you’re going to do whatever you want to do. I really hope you’re not fooling with Alohnzo to piss Luca off.”

“So, what if I pissed Luca off? He deserves it, but truthfully, I’ve had feelings for Alohnzo for a while, and now, I’m in love with him.”

“The thing is you don’t have to tell me that. You hid it well until the night of the bonfire. I can see love all over you. I just don’t want you to confuse lust with love. I don’t want to see Alohnzo get hurt if you decide to go back to Luca.”

“I’m not going back to Luca. I’m filing the papers tomorrow morning.”

“Divorce is a process, and if Luca decides to be an ass, he can drag it out.”

“Oh, I know, but I’m ready for that. I know Luca well enough to know he is going to try to ruin my life.
