WHEN ERNIE AND I got back to St. Augustine’s later that day, Sister Lottie gave us a big toothy smile and asked how our day went as if we were just coming home from school. She even offered us a cool glass of milk and some cookies, which we both wolfed down. I wanted to ask her about the possibility of finding a coyote, but I didn’t dare in front of Ernie. He was already looking less ruddy and refreshed than this morning. That night, while we sat around a table with plates of manicotti and thick bread, he was quieter, pensive.

“I just don’t get it,” he said as we got ready for bed that night. “How long are we staying here? And why is Sister Lottie not doing anything?”

“Well, she’s giving us food and a place to stay,” I reminded him.

“Right. But when are we gonna find Mami and go to California?”

“Soon,” I said. I was running out of lies and time.
