That plummeting feeling of my stomach dropping out had been warranted. The eyes that met me were a myriad of confused gazes, anger, sadness. So many spiraling emotions caused the tension in the air to escalate, and my heart clenched. I had barely had a chance to get to know so many of these faces. I wanted to do better by them—I needed to do better by them.

My hands itched to reach up and cross over my chest. Instead, I stood rigid, looking at my pack and considering how to even begin this news. Focusing my eyes to Jackson—one of the more friendly and familiar faces of the gathering—I steeled myself. Beside him, Lucas, Graham and Declan also now stood—I didn’t want to dwell on the reasons as to why they felt they should be in the crowd of our pack when we knew damn well they should have been up here with me.

Rylan remained solidly behind me, as if afraid I would collapse. “As many of you know, if not all of you—Tanner is dead. I’m…” Words seemed inadequate in this moment. “I”m sorry. I know he was one of us until very recently, and I can only imagine—”

“No, he was one of us,” a snarling voice came from the front, cutting me off rather efficiently. The speaker was one of the females of the pack—we had only a few. I had noticed her before. It was hard not to. Her black hair was sleek and perfectly straight, falling down her back in a curtain of satin. The pout of red lips revealed just how she felt about this situation, and the glare of her arresting blue eyes spoke volumes as she notched her head up in a challenge that might have inflicted annoyance upon my inner wolf, but only caused my heart to further plummet. “You have only been in our pack for a little over a month. Don’t you think it’s a bit presumptuous to speak from a place that affects you so very little in comparison to us?”

Shots fired, I thought glumly, and could feel the fatigue wash over me in that moment. When I didn’t instantly reply with the fire that had been instilled in me upon my first arrival here, she seemed emboldened by that.

There was a toss of her hair directed at me, and at first I looked to the others, trying to gauge their reaction, but her movement caught the corner of my eye and I turned back to her just in time to see her sidle up to Lucas, draping herself on him and causing me to become completely still for a moment in pure disbelief.

Lucas looked surprised as well, but then his expression melted away to sheepishness, which hurt perhaps more than anything else—what did that look even mean?

I tried to ignore it. He began to gently remove her claiming touch from him, but looking on, it only seemed half-heartedly.
