CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Emma, what did you just say?” Dean opens the back door of the truck and stares in at me.

“It starved to death.” I repeat breathlessly. It’s just a guess, but it makes sense. If there are no more humans for the zombies to eat, there’s no reason for them to survive. It’s been almost two months since the outbreak started. Everyone in the world is either dead, or hiding. I smile at myself approvingly.

“Holy shit Emma. I think you’re right.” Dean walks over to the zombie and kicks it with his foot. I tense in the backseat waiting for it to attack him. He turns to the truck and shakes his head. “Well, it’s dead.” Dean says pulling the door shut as he sits in the front seat of the truck.

“We might have hope after all.” Judias finally talks. His tone is bored. He sits in the front seat with his hands on the steering wheel staring out the window.

“I don’t know.” I say to no one as I also stare out the window. A park sits to our left. The beautiful autumn leaves are falling coloring the ground in yellows and oranges. An abandoned swing set blows lightly in the breeze.

The body of a child lays parallel with a slide. I let out a small cry as I look down at Connie asleep on my lap. Her puppy blanket is wrapped tightly around her. The fluttering in my stomach makes me sob.

“Emma, are you okay?” Dean asks looking to me, to the slide and then back to me again. His face drops. “Emma. Everything will be fine. I’ve told you that. I promise.” He looks at me sympathetically.

“I don’t know what I’d do if my child just died like that.” I shake my head slowly as in holding back tears.

“Me either Emma, Let’s not think about it.” Dean rubs my shoulder and pulls me to him.

“God Damn it!” Judias screams, making me and Dean jump. He slams his fists on the steering wheel and slams his forehead down hard on it and I swear he’s crying.

“Judias?” I ask cautiously. I look at him in shock from his sudden outburst. Dean shrugs at me and looks to Judias.

“Hey, you okay man?” He puts a hand on Judias’ shoulder.

“My kid man, they got my fucking kid.” His words are barely understandable through his clenched teeth. My heart stops beating and my jaw falls to the floor. Judias looks at me through his tear-filled eyes. “My son and I were coming home from a movie. We pulled in the driveway and I seen that our front door was open. I told him to stay behind in the car, but he didn’t listen. One of those things ran out from behind the car and just snatched him up. He bit into his face. I didn’t know what to do. I tried to save him, but I need my supplies. I killed the thing and tried to drive my son to the hospital. When we got there he woke back up…” He shakes his head.
