The kitchen was picked up. The margarita machine was cleaned and stored in the tall cabinet beside the stove that, oddly enough, had one shelf right in the middle of it, ruining any chance of it being utilized for mops or brooms. Allen must have planned to house the margarita machine there because it fit perfectly on the shelf.

Out of necessity, she started in on the floors. Not because they needed it but because cleaning the floors would put some much-needed space between her and Betty, who utilized their closeness while following her around to pepper her with questions.

Not only did the questions not stop as Betty meandered around room to room while Kristen swept, asking about everything from Kristen’s favorite foods to whether she liked Allen’s house, but it quickly became harder and harder for her to mentally keep track of what her answers were not to contradict herself.

She liked anything not too spicy—a lie created to fit her Kristen Chanel persona. The last one was easy. She loved Allen’s house. What wasn’t to like, considering she would be homeless without it?

And if the beach had not done it, Allen’s dislike for Milo was officially rubbing off on her by the time she made it to the living room. Betty’s dog, as it turned out, had an uncanny ability to walk through each and every pile Kristen made. As she swept the kitchen, she scooped anything resembling a pile before Milo could increase his odds of being beaten to death with a broom.

“Where did you grow up?”

“Depends,” she muttered.

Kristen could tell where this was headed. Betty wanted to fill in the blanks on her son’s housemate, and stalking Kristen while she swept was her way of collecting the intel. Even Milo’s ears perked up.

“We moved a lot. I couldn’t really tell you why at the time—” she said, preparing for Betty’s next line of questioning, “they always had their reasons. But I was a kid, so I was just sad to leave whatever friends I had made. Looking back, I think it had to do with money.”

“Isn’t most things?” Betty chuckled drily.

Kristen couldn’t agree more, but she was too busy mentally treading that fine line of giving just enough of the truth to lessen the lies. It made it easier to remember that way. She had moved a lot, but it was after her mother’s death. Before that, all she could remember was being in one home. Her mother had been a stay-at-home mom while her dad traveled for work, and she couldn’t remember when that changed, and her mom started working for the people who would ultimately kill her. Anytime she asked her dad about that time in their lives right before her death, he would either get too sad or too mad for her to get much out of him.

“My parents were always looking for better jobs, better pay, but once my mom passed, I know we were evicted at least once. We never lived anywhere with a view like this, I can tell you that.
