32} Bright Falco

Heading down the boardwalk, Bright Falco felt lighter. Walking seemed a pleasure now, rather than an arduous trip. He knew of a cheap hotel. One he never had the money to rent. Now, he had some cash riding reassuringly in his pocket. The thrift store at the edge of town would be a good place to find some clothes, maybe another pair of shoes. Tonight, he'd sleep in a real bed, and wouldn't have to brush sand from his pants when he woke in the morning.

Inevitably, he thought of that October day four years ago.

It was a day like every other day, since finding the love of his life. Glorious. He wondered what he had done to deserve a woman like Lori. Since meeting her, everything in his life turned around. Everything went his way. He felt like she was a goddess who had cast her magical spell on him, and brought with it all the favor of the gods.

And now, she was giving him a child. The miracle of life that was the singular domain of women. Only women could bring life into the world, and he wondered why they were not worshiped for this fact alone. He wanted to become a champion of women's rights. He wanted to live in a matriarchy.

Earlier that day, he laughed at himself, his face to the wind and sun, as they held hands and walked barefoot along the rainy beach. He hoped she had a girl.

Her intention to call her parents and tell them they were about to be grandparents, had been interrupted by the oncoming storm.

The wind picked up, the rain became a sheet of water, and they ran back to their little apartment near the beach off Atlantic Avenue to ride out the storm.

Then, it was as if the gods changed their minds. No one ever thinks of anything but the hurricane itself, and he had been guilty of the same. They had done fine until the storm surge hit.

In one horrible moment, a section of wall was impaled by a slab of concrete. The storm surge had buckled the pavement of the parking lot with the force of its power, and driven the slab through the wall. It landed on Lori.

He'd tried in vain to move the massive slab, but she was stuck. When the sand and water poured in, it covered her, and he dove under the water to breath air into her mouth. The last time he did it, her lips were slack. She was just gone.

He held onto the slab and screamed with rage at the ceiling as it buckled and fell in around him.

An entire segment of his life went dark, then. His next memory was waking up in the hospital, as generators struggled to keep the lights on.

Medical personnel did their best to check on him but there were others coming in all the time. Others who were dying. He wandered through the ER, searching for her. She was nowhere about. Finally, he found a nurse who checked his file, and saw the scribbled note at the bottom.
