Chapter 13
WILL
I parked and got out of the car. I hated meeting Charlotte like this. In some strange place, a half hour away. In a place we were sure not to bump into anyone we knew. It made our date feel cheap. But I wanted to take my girl out. Not curl up on the sofa with her each night she was free and we were sure Mamie or Kels wouldn’t show up. I hated sneaking around. We weren’t teenagers anymore. But we were forced to act like it to keep up the secret. Or at least for Charlotte to feel more comfortable. And I would do anything for her.
I walked into the restaurant and was seated in a booth at the back of the place, out of sight. You never knew.
After sending Charlotte a quick text informing her where I was seated, I browsed the menu, my stomach grumbling.
“Hi.” She walked up, looking as gorgeous as ever. Her hair was down and slightly wavy, begging me to run my fingers through it.
“Hey, beautiful.” I stood up to kiss her. I kept it short, although my body responded the moment our skin met, urging me to lengthen the contact.
“What looks good?” She picked up her own menu as she sat down close to me, her knees touching my legs.
“I’m not sure.”
After another perusal, we both ended up ordering their house burger and chocolate shakes.
“So,” I said, checking over my shoulder, “this is nice.”
“A little weird, right?” She took a big sip of her water.
“Yeah,” we both blurted simultaneously, and chuckled.
“I guess we’ll need more practice dating out in the open, to get more comfortable being out together.” I smiled.
“Will.” Charlotte took on a warning tone.
“It’s not always going to be like this.” My leg started to bounce up and down.
The server interrupted us, setting our food down. Charlotte smiled at the girl, drawing my gaze to hers. Soft lines were etched at the corners of her eyes, and a faint blue hue was visible under them. The moment we were alone again, I reached out to her, clasping one of her hands in mine as she made a move to pick up her burger.
“Hey.” I spoke low, not drawing any attention from the other patrons to us. “What’s going on?”
“Well, I was trying to eat, but I was interrupted. Rather rudely.” Charlotte forced a smile, but the action didn’t light up her face like it usually did.
“Don’t try to distract me with a joke. I can see something’s up. What’s the matter?”
Charlotte sat back and exhaled, breaking up the hold I had on her hand. I scooted closer and picked up her hand that rested on the seat.
“It’s nothing, really.” She ran a hand through her hair, tucking it behind her ear.
“This is me you’re talking to. I know you’re trying to brush off whatever it is. But you’re not okay. Please, talk to me.”
She stared at me a moment, and I held her gaze, not backing down. She released the breath she held and spoke.
