Chapter Eight
Valentina
âYou donât really plan on wearing that, do you?â Victoria asked the moment she saw my wedding dress. She and I had spent the last two weeks together, and, though I hated to admit it, Matteo was right. She was a godsend. There was no way I would have been able to prepare for this wedding without her.
I would have been perfectly fine with a civil ceremony without all the fuss, but as the head of his family, Matteo needed the spectacle. It had to happen in a Catholic church, and everyone who was anyone in Sicily was invited.
âWhatâs wrong with this dress? Sheâll be amazing in it. Hell, Matteo may end up throwing her over his shoulder caveman style as soon as they say, âI do.ââ Jessica grinned, staring at her creation.
Jessica and Melody had arrived yesterday, but this was the first chance weâd had to see what my dress would look like actually on. Sheâd toed the line between chic and sexy, with a hint of the traditional. Of course, the fact it was a dark enough navy blue it almost seemed black had Victoria losing her shit.
âYou cannot get married in black. It just isnât done.â Victoria rubbed her forehead. It seemed to be a nervous habit, so maybe she was worried about this more than she should be.
âDo you really think heâll care what she is wearing?â Melody asked. âHeâs a guy, and they rarely care about that shit.â
âI promise, if he is bothered, Iâll make sure he knows you had nothing to do with it, okay? This was my choice, and Iâm going with it. Besides, we marry tomorrow. Itâs not like I have time to change it, even if I wanted to.â
Victoria took a deep breath. âThe dress is gorgeous. I donât mean to offend; I only worry what kind of message you are sending to everyone in attendance. This is a wedding, not a funeral.â
âThe dress is navy blue, not black, and you missed the best part.â Jessica pulled out a blue sash that was the exact blue in my diamond ring. It had crystals covering it that made it shimmer in the light. She wrapped it around my waist, and immediately the starkness of the color became more muted.
âWow,â Victoria sighed.
âI know, right? Itâs pure magic, even if I do say so myself. I was inspired. In fact, Iâm thinking about moving to Italy and doing an entire line of wedding dresses.â Jessica grinned from ear to ear.
âWhat about your internship?â I was confused. Jessica had talked about little else for the past six months.
Jessica bit her lip and glanced away.
âWhat arenât you telling me?â I asked.
âFine, I lost the internship, and Iâm not sure I really wanted it, anyway. Iâm looking for a little adventure, and Iâm inspired in a way fetching coffee for a big-name designer would never have given me.â When she looked away, I knew she was hiding something.
âOh my God, you lost your internship because youâre here.
