Chapter 19
Sera wasnât in the basement, but I found the spell book I thought she wouldâve taken since it contained the spell for raising someone from the dead. That it was still in its place on the bookshelf concerned me. Mizrabel had contacted and used her once before, which meant it was possible the sorceress had done it again.
The bigger question was why Mizrabel had chosen Sera in the first place. Sure, the girl was vulnerable and thus easy to manipulate, but it had to be more than that. It seemed too coincidental that Mizrabel had chosen Sera just before I found her. Plus, Mizrabel was my mother. Had she somehow known I would find Sera? Did something tie Sera and me to each other?
If I knew how to reach Abernathy, I would have, but he was still recovering from the ordeal of freeing me as the heart of Polonias. I was on my own.
The most worrisome question: Who did Sera intend to bring back from the dead? If Mizrabel was involved, I thought I might know, I needed to find Sera and stop her before she did something she couldnât come back from.
After the basement, we checked the forest.
âSo, are you going to ask me to the Halloween dance?â Gabe asked as we made our way back to the academy, intent on searching Seraâs room for any clues.
I was surprised he mentioned it, but pleasantly so. âDo you want to go? I have to chaperone, but you could help me.â
He smiled, kissing my fingers, and for a moment I saw the Gabe I fell in love with when we were still in high school. âIs that your invitation? No writing it out in a spiderâs web or chocolate or something?â
I laughed, and he joined in. Pulling us to a stop, I thought of a spell. âHow about this?â I asked, sending the question âWill you go to the dance with me, Gabe?â into the air where it shone with golden dust. Pixelettes fluttering in the distance saw it and repeated the question a hundred times around us, making Gabe and me laugh with delight. .
âBetter,â he said, his eyes shining in wonder. âAnd the answer is yes.â
âIâm so glad.â I watched his face, enjoying the joy visible in his expression. Itâd been a long time since he looked so happy.
Gabe bent down and brushed his lips against mine lightly, and it was like I was lit on fire. Hungry desire had me throwing my arms around him as he deepened the kiss, his hands on my hips.
We were standing in the hallway near Seraâs room and someone cleared their throat followed by a rattle of giggling.
I reluctantly pushed Gabe away and saw Kaylan and Kimberly were standing in front of us.
âWe didnât want to interrupt, but youâre blocking our way,â Kimberly said, giving us a look that said we were too old for public displays of affection.
âSorry about that, ladies,â Gabe said, pulling me against the wall and giving them his most charming smile.
