Chapter Nine

Maggie ushered Ruby back inside the donut shop and breezed past Myra, who was working at the front counter. She ordered Orson to help Myra with no mention of what they had found outside.

“We need to figure out what to do next,” Maggie said.

“What do we need to figure out?” Ruby asked. “We pull her into the office and ask her what’s going on.”

Maggie sighed heavily. “We also need to ask her why she lied.”

“When did she lie?” Ruby asked.

“She said she was staying at the new bed and breakfast,” Maggie said. “Clearly, that wasn’t true.”

“I think we ought to just wait and see what she has to say. It may not be so black and white.”

“I hope you’re right.” Maggie thought for a moment. “She did seem to know a lot about Gretchen LeClair, the owner of the bed and breakfast. And I forgot to tell you that Orson said some woman came in here looking for Myra just before Brett came in. He also said the woman left right when Brett arrived, even before getting to see Myra. Who would she know around here other than Gretchen?”

Ruby frowned. “Good point. And Orson would have recognized Gretchen as the woman from the grocery store, so it definitely wasn’t her.”

“Right. That’s why I wanted to plan what we’re going to say before we talk to her.”

“I can appreciate your love for planning, but I just want to take a minute to figure things out before we chase her off,” Ruby said. “She has some explaining to do, and I hope that’s enough.”

“What do you mean, you hope that it’s enough?”

Ruby opened the office door a crack and peeked out into the kitchen. “Because, depending on her explanation,” she said quietly, “you and I both know we’re going to have to talk to Brett about this.”

Maggie picked up a pen from her small desk. She tapped the pen on the desktop for a moment. “Let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that. I like Myra, and I want to help her out. And I think she can help us out, too.”

Ruby peeked out the office door once more. Someone was walking into the kitchen. She jerked her head toward the door and mouthed Myra’s name. Maggie smiled and stood up from her desk. “Let’s get back to work for now,” she said. “We can address the other issues after closing. We don’t need to cause a scene in the middle of our shift.”

She followed Ruby back out to the kitchen, where she went to work on a new batch of scones for the afternoon. Ruby trained Myra on the boxed lunches at the prep table while Orson watched the front. After the shop closed for the day, Maggie waited while Orson finished wiping down the counters and tables. She worked with Myra to break down the inside of the display case, and they carried the trays into the kitchen and washed each one down. Maggie cleaned out the glass from the inside while Ruby kept Myra busy in the storeroom until Orson left for the day.
