Chapter 16

It was a beautiful summer afternoon. The wind off the bay blew the scent of the sea across the fields. By the time they returned home, Rose looked down from her hill at the village. As clouds drifted by, a lone ray of sun beamed on the village and the bay, making the water seem like shimmering diamonds. She let out a sigh of contentment before walking up the cobblestone path to the door.

“Well, I better get back,” Cushie said, ruffling Neil’s hair. “I’ll see you later.”

“Bye, Cushie!” Norah called out, balancing on the stone wall.

“Goodbye, ya monkey!” Cushie called over her shoulder. “Come over for a visit.”

“Wait just one minute. Get back here,” Rose said severely.

Cushie stopped and turned on a dime, snapping off a salute.

“You look like Benny Hill,” Rose said. “Where do you think you’re going? You haven’t told me what the heck is going on.”

“I was going to get Dev…”

“Why don’t I believe you?” Rose put her hands on her hips.

“I don’t know, darlin’. I’m as believable as the next.”

“Neil,” Rose said, still watching Cushie. “Will you go get Dev, please?”

“Should I tell her she’s in trouble?”

“No, she’s…just go.”

Neil immediately ran down the path to the farmhouse.

“I go too,” Norah yelled, following him. “I get to tell her she’s in trouble.”

“She’s not in…!” Rose stopped. “Now I’m yelling at my children.”

Cushie put her hand to her heart. “Ya’ve wounded me deeply, Rose.”

Rose cocked an eyebrow. “I highly doubt that. C’mon.”

They no sooner sat at the kitchen table when Dev stood at the back door.

“Hello in the house!” Dev said, smiling. “Rose, Norah is out climbing on the stone walls. But don’t worry Finn is out there.” She looked at Cushie, and her smile faded. “I know that look. What’s wrong? What have ya done?”

“I have no idea what’s wrong,” Rose said. “C’mon in.”

“Mom, is it okay if I use the computer?” Neil asked quickly. “I want to check up on the story about seals. Then I want to read that book.”

“Sure, honey. Oh, go get your sister off the wall, will you? Then not too long on the computer. It’s a beautiful afternoon. You can read late—”

Neil had already run out of the kitchen.

“—ter.” Rose sighed. “One is walking on stone walls, and the other has his nose in the Internet.”

No sooner did Dev hang up her jacket, Rose heard a gentle knock at the front door. It was Anne Fahy cradling a box under one arm and the easel in the other.

“Good afternoon. I closed up a bit early.”

“Gee, I wonder why.”

Anne laughed, struggling with the box.

“C’mon in.”

“Thank you. Ya know your daughter is walking on the stone wall.” Anne walked in, looking around in awe.

“Yes. I’ve been told.” Rose looked out the window. Norah was indeed balancing atop the stone wall while Neil pleaded with her. Thank God they were short walls.

“This is charming,” Anne said. “Oh, Cushie and Dev are here?”

“As if you didn’t know,” Rose accused her.

Anne blushed, then laughed. “I suppose I did.
