THE NEXT DAY, THE MEN went to the mainland to enjoy a pheasant hunting trip. Finally, the ladies assembled in the parlor, where everyone began knitting their favorite articles of clothing.

All were knitting except Alyssa Nicole, who painted a landscape scene in various colors... an art in which she was adept.

Charlotte was reading over the morning newspaper. She glanced up and over at her daughter, “Alyssa, who do you think is gone?”

“Gone?” she replied while changing brushes.

“Dead... passed away, of course. Who do you think is dead?”

“Really, Mother. I wouldn’t even know where to begin. No one that we are interested in, I am sure, or you wouldn’t use that tone in your voice. So who is.... gone, Mother?” listlessly asked Alyssa as she continued painting.

“Sabrina Covington,” said Charlotte, laying the newspaper on her lap and looking at her daughter.

It is good that she looked at Alyssa. If she had glanced over at Bernice, she would have seen that the beautiful widow lady had turned pale and marble and was staring at her with fixed eyes of stone, forgetful that others might see her response.

Alyssa replied, “I don’t understand, Mother. What is there so surprising in that? She was almost a hundred years old, was she not?”

“Yes, the paper says ninety-five.”

“The only wonder I see is that she lived so long,” said Alyssa.

“She was a lonely and very selfish woman. She never did care for anyone and always just for herself. Being such a person, I am so surprised she lived so long.” She paused, looked at the others, and continued, “The woman we are talking about is a remarkable woman who just died. You must have heard of her, Bernice... Sabrina Covington?”

“Yes... I think I’ve heard of her,” replied Bernice. She shifted how she was sitting to get her back to the window. Her face was now in the shadows as she bent over her knitting.

Had Charlotte not been so preoccupied with her subject matter, she would have noticed the agitation of her guest.

“Oh, yes, such a remarkable woman, Sabrina Covington, and with a great history. Perhaps if you’re not familiar with her that much, Bernice, you would like to hear a bit of her past.

“Of course,” faintly replied the pallid widow.

“Well, her maiden name was Dianne Smith... a prevalent name in America. You will find it in any phone directory of major cities. And, I bet you wonder how a person with such a common name could end up here as Sabrina Covington.”

“Yes,” breathed Bernice, still bending low over her knitting, while Amala stopped everything she was doing and gave every bit of her attention to Charlotte as she continued to tell her story.

Although her name was common, she didn’t belong to an ordinary family. She fell in love with a prince from Germany, and all Hell broke loose because she was a commoner. There was much talk about this marriage, and the man’s father insisted they divorce immediately. So, the Prince consented to divorce his beautiful wife, whether she consented or not.
