ROOK

Ilooked down at Winnie’s face while she snuggled further into my side. I let my fingertips slide up and down her side beneath her t-shirt and resisted the urge to kiss her forehead. She was fine as fuck even when she was sleeping and honestly, I wanted to just roll on top of her and slide back inside of her.

I didn’t do that shit though. I kissed the top of her head and let my eyes flutter shut again. I grinned when I felt her kiss my side. I opened an eye and looked down at her. Her eyes were already on me. She rolled onto her stomach. I reached down and pushed her locs out of her face. She put her hands beneath her face.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” Winnie blinked up at me. “Rook⁠—”

“This doesn’t change anything.” I guessed her next statement and she smiled.

“That’s right.” She took a deep breath. “I’m cool with us sleeping together and shit. That’s fine. It’s fun. You’re a good lay. In two years, though, I’m collecting my money and leaving.”

“I never asked you to stay.”

“And I never want you to think that I will,” she said seriously. “Being friends with benefits could be fun and I’m down for that, but I’m not going to fall in love with you and I don’t want you to fall in love with me.”

“Alright.” I chuckled. “Damn, Winnie. You think the pussy was good enough for me to be throwing the love word around after two times and less than a week?”

“Well the way you were moaning just from eating it…” She shrugged.

I snickered. “You a lil right,” I admitted.

She laughed and rolled her eyes. Then she rolled back onto her side and readjusted her head on my arm. She closed her eyes. I followed her lead.

I sighed when my phone vibrated on the bedside table. I grabbed it with my eyes closed but answered.

“Yeah?”

“I need to make a pick up. You available?” Bishop skipped a greeting.

“Yeah. I’ll meet you in the kitchen in a few minutes.”

“Alright. Thanks.”

“Yeah.” I yawned but unraveled myself from Winnie and climbed up. I left Winnie right where she was, laid on her stomach and looking fucking beautiful and got ready for my day.

When I walked in the kitchen, Bishop was obsessively wiping his glasses. I snatched the rag from his hand as soon as I was close enough. I took his glasses too, wiped them myself and offered them back.

“They’re clean,” I deadpanned. Bishop cleared his throat but nodded without a word. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m nervous,” he confessed. He gave a forced laugh that put me on edge.

“Why you nervous?”

“Nigga this is a big deal. I’m the only nigga in generations of our family to propose outright without a middle man. I’d be the first one married to a man at all. Asante could say no for all we know. If he says yes, this life is a lot too. It could chew him up and spit him out. Going this public before our birthday is a quick transition.
