Chapter Ten

Although Reign was comforted by Rome’s support and the conversation they had, she still found it difficult to settle, even as she lay next to the man she loved with all her heart. The midnight moon shone brightly through the minimal spaces in the blinds. Rome held Reign close, their bodies close enough in proximity that she could feel the beat of his heart and the slight snore that soothingly breached the silence in the room. Reign was comforted, held close. The atmosphere should have made for restful slumber. Yet, it didn’t, not that night, not for Reign. She played the conversation with her father over and over in her head, causing her to toss and turn. She remembered the look on the Senegalese woman’s face when the man assaulted her simply for being a woman. When she moved next to him, Rome accommodated her, even in his sleep.

His loving arms were comforting. They were. Yet, even as Reign’s body resettled next to Rome, her mind continued to wander, fixated on the issues she’d born witness to that were summarily undermined by her father’s insensitive commentary. How could he be so blind, so oblivious to how his only daughter felt? Or was it that he didn’t care?

That was the question Reign continued to grapple with upon waking. She tried to shake the troubling thoughts and the even more disturbing answers as she moved through her day, but Reign was woefully unsuccessful. Even as she sat with Rome to discuss the progress of the meetings, they had in Senegal and the next steps for his business, Reign’s mind wandered at the slightest break in conversation. There were mounds of paperwork on the table between them. Rome reviewed one of the contracts proposed to him by one of the Senegalese companies he was very interested in working with. Usually, Reign was dug in, entirely focused. When Rome asked Reign a question pertaining to the contract, she was unresponsive, although she was sitting right next to him.

Rome looked up from the paperwork to find Reign doodling, her eyes looking at the paper but not focused on what she was doing. Before saying anything to her, Rome looked at what she’d been drawing. His interest was piqued.

“What’s that, love?” He asked, drawing Reign’s attention. She briefly looked in his direction, their eyes meeting before hers returned to the paper in front of her.

“Maybe something, maybe nothing,” Reign replied, her doodling continuing.

Rome laced his arm around the back of her chair. “It looks like something to me,” he countered. “Talk to me,” Rome encouraged. “Tell me what’s on your beautiful mind.”

Rome’s comment caused Reign’s cheeks to flush red. She didn’t have to say anything. His impact was literally written all over her face. He leaned in even more and focused on what she’d written on the page. There were multiple variations of her name scribbled on the page. Reign noticed that he was focused on her scratch pad and instantly became self-conscious.

“Angelle’s Reign,” she finally replied.
