Chapter Twelve

June 19, 1819

Arthur had risen late in the morning, which meant he’d missed breakfast entirely. That suited him just fine, for he hadn’t wished to see his family. Especially since he hadn’t gotten in last night after being with Julianna until well after one in the morning. He’d gone directly to his study to indulge in brandy, which was the reason he suffered a megrim now.

Where he thought that indulging in carnal pleasures would finally push her from his mind, he’d discovered the exact opposite. After intercourse, he was even more captivated with her, and he hadn’t the first blessed clue what to do about that.

Oh, God.

He stumbled into his study and had just dropped into the chair behind his desk when his sister sailed into the room. “What the devil do you want?”

“And a good afternoon to you, too.” She crossed the room, and once at the window, opened the drapes, unlocked the catch, and then pushed the glass panel outward. “You need fresh air. It’s overcast and looks like rain, but there’s a relative breeze that will do you good.”

“How do you know I’m ailing?” He didn’t care his tone was gruff. His sister had the tendency to meddle, and today, he hadn’t the wherewithal to indulge her.

“First, you’re slumped over in your chair and holding a hand to your head, which indicates you have a megrim.” She turned about and ticked off the items on her fingers. “Second, because your head pains you and since there is a nearly empty bottle of brandy still sitting on your desk, I believe you came in late last night and took refuge in spirits. Thirdly, because you did that, you must have done something that severely preys upon your conscience. And fourth, your cravat and its intricate knot, cannot quite hide the edge of that love bite on your neck.” Dear Sophia arched a blonde eyebrow. “Shall I go on or will you tell me what happened to you last night?”

“Do I have a choice?”

And when the hell had she become so accomplished at discerning little details? He put a hand to his neck. Last night, shortly before he’d left Julianna’s company, she’d been rather frisky during a bout of kissing, and since he’d just shown her how to make such a mark, she wished to experiment on him. Thus, the resulting bruise. Though his head ached, he couldn’t hold back a grin, for the woman was certainly a quick study. He had hoped no one in his family would prove so observant.

“You do not.” Sophia flashed him a grin of victory. She approached his desk then perched on the edge of a chair that faced his desk. “Did the ingestion of too much brandy help you forget or come to terms with whatever you’re grappling with?”

He heaved out a breath of frustration. “Not really.”

“Then you deserve the megrim.” She clasped her hands in her lap, looking for all the world like a proper ton lady, but there was a rebellious streak in her a mile long when she chose to unveil it.
