Prologue

The days had been overcast. Grey and heavy cloud coverage clung to the Moors of Alyss, and the hours dragged on. It was, in part, a reflection of Kastien’s own mood as he watched Soora return to her farm. As the villagers filtered in and out of her home for eggs and milk, she put on a friendly smile and chatted like nothing was wrong. But when she was alone, he could see the heartbreak and confusion weigh her down as he secretly watched over her.

The trouble was, he didn’t know if that heartbreak was for him or for Sithra.

Kastien didn’t fully understand what happened between Soora and Sithra. All he knew was that, before he knew he was a shifter, Sithra lived in the village and courted Soora. The villagers had called it young love, but when he’d seen Soora in Sithra’s embrace, he knew that it was much more than that. At least, it was for Sithra.

There was some relief in knowing that Soora had returned home. At no point in time did he see Sithra visit her, but she also wasn’t searching for him either. She’d made her feelings very clear. She needed space.

It was in these times that Kastien cursed Elaina. As Soora’s mother, it was her responsibility to explain Soora’s her past to her. As the daughter of the fallen King Faeylen and the former slave, Soora was in danger from the current king. And even worse, she had developed strange abilities that could only be explained by the royal dragon blood that ran through her veins. After all, females weren’t born to shifters. It was unheard of. And yet Soora could transfer intense heat through her touch and burn flesh. But Elaina failed to share these secrets with her daughter, and so, on her deathbed, she’d shared them with Kastien instead.

And now he carried the burden of her silence. Because he struggled to keep her secret, he was driving Soora away. She couldn’t be sure that she could trust him.

And maybe she was right.

Kastien wasn’t exactly safe. He was hunted by all of Erith’s dark shifters, and Soora was his only weak spot. The more time he spent with her, the more exposed she was to harm. And the less he was able to focus on his real mission.

Put an end to Brakkus’s plan.

The human slave race in Erith was changing. As they birthed more females, their viorrh was weaker and weaker, making them useless to the shifters. They were effectively breeding out the one thing shifters needed. In desperation, Brakkus had hatched a new plan. After centuries of comfortable living, the shifters would now have to reach out to the villages, take their women, and build a new race of slaves.
