In 50 BCE, Caesar would have to greatly rely upon Antony’s loyalty. The great general’s political troubles were coming to a head, and there seemed to be every likelihood he would be recalled to Rome and submitted to a trial by his political rivals, who were headed by Caesar’s former friend and ally Pompey. Recognizing that he would need a powerful voice in the Senate, Caesar dispatched Antony to Italy, to speak for him and drum up popular support for his cause. Since Caesar’s political mandate was expiring, he would soon lose his immunity from prosecution, so he prepared to march into Italy to pursue what he claimed where his rights.
