HE’D WAIT THROUGH ONE more song, then he was going to slip out of the Macfarlane townhouse and make straight for White’s. If he found Calvin, he would strangle him before drinking whatever expensive wine his best friend was partial to at the moment.

Calvin must have been foxed when he recounted the list of social engagements he’d seen on Sylvia’s parlor table.

At least the Misses Macfarlane had passable singing voices. It was the only thing making the musicale bearable. That and the fine brandy Lord Macfarlane had furnished him with a few minutes before. But soon he’d reach the bottom of the glass.

This was not one of the agreed-upon seven outings. However, it was entirely reasonable that he and Sylvia would come across one another at other events. They had many mutual acquaintances and would naturally receive similar invitations.

Jasper had no notion why she’d made a list of events, if not to attend them. But when Calvin had mentioned it, Jasper saw the golden opportunity. Even as one hand palmed his snifter of brandy, the other fingered the list he’d made from Calvin’s recounting, folded and tucked away safely in his pocket.

There was a brief pause in the performance as one song concluded, while the Misses MacFarlane paused to sip a bit of honeyed water. Jasper took it for the opportunity it was, sidling out of his seat and toward the back of the room where the young women’s parents watched from the music room doors.

But they were no longer alone.

She was dressed in a monochromatic gown of light amber, a delicate color that only a few shades pinker would have been called peach. The puffs of lace lining the sleeves and neckline were dyed to perfectly match the satin column of the gown. Pastel lace was where the nod to propriety ended.

The square neckline cut a straight line low across her bosom, the corners only appearing where her arms met her body, allowing just enough fabric to affix a sleeve. The expanse of creamy skin and finely boned shoulder set him aflame. And had certainly caught the eye of every other gentleman in attendance.

Jasper squeezed his glass of brandy so hard the stem groaned in his grasp.

The tight shape of her gown, highlighting her full hips, strained and caught on the glorious womanly form beneath as she curtsied to their hosts. She laughed, a low throaty sound that carried across the crowd and touched his soul. Of course, the blinding glint of the topaz gems she’d draped herself in had a similar mesmerizing effect.

He recognized the moment she noticed him. The glass of champagne she’d accepted never touched her lips. Three steps later, they were face to face in the rear of the music room.

“My lord Viscount,” she ground out, hand tight around her glass of champagne. “I did not expect to see you this evening.” As she spoke, her eyes darted around the room.

Looking for who? He tried to follow her gaze, but then it landed back upon him.
