"I don't believe it!" Cara gasped. It was lunch hour on Monday, and Jessica, Amy, and Lila had just finished telling her about their adventure at Jamie Peters's house.
"Well, you'd better believe it, because it's true," Amy said happily. "And don't tell a single soul, either. The four of us are the only ones who know!"
"Remember how I said I thought he'd move here to Sweet Valley?" Lila reminded everyone for the tenth time. "I swear, I must be omniscient or something."
"And you actually saw him?" Cara continued, her eyes wide with amazement.
"Clear as day. He was just a few yards away from us. We could even hear the conversation he was having on his cordless phone," Jessica informed her.
"I want to see him," Cara said quickly. "When do I get to go over to the Kitterby place with you and see Jamie Peters for myself?"
Lila looked at Jessica and Amy. "I don't know," she said slowly. "I'm supposed to have a lesson with Max this afternoon."
"Oh, by the way, Lila, I saw an article in the newspaper this weekend on that instrument you're learning to play," Cara told her. "What's it called again?"
"The marimba," Lila said proudly.
"Yeah, that's it. The article said that it's one of the hottest new instruments among young musicians."
"See? I told you guys! Just wait till I get an audition with Jamie Peters! He'll help me become famous overnight."
Cara looked flabbergasted. "You're going to play in front of a famous rock star? But you've only been taking lessons for a couple of days!"
"I happen to have natural talent for the marimba. That's what Max Sharpe thinks. Besides, I'm not crazy. I'm not going to play for Jamie until I'm much better. At least not for another week or two!"
"Lucky Jamie," Jessica said sarcastically. "He's going to be so glad he picked Sweet Valley over Hollywood."
"I'm dying to see Jamie Peters for myself." Cara cut in. "Lila, if you've got a lesson, maybe Jessica and Amy can take me."
"No!' Lila cried. "I mean, I'd better come with you," she added hastily, embarrassed by her outburst. "It's justâyou know, it's tricky finding the right way in, and someone has to be there to keep Jessica and Amy quiet. On Saturday they practically gave us away."
"Lila doesn't want us going over there without her. She seems to think she has some kind of patent on Jamie Peters these days," Amy grumbled.
Lila ignored this. "We'll go back, but on one condition. No one can make a single peep. No whispering, and no complaining about bees!" She turned apologetically to Cara. "I know you won't be this way, but Jessica and Amy just couldn't control themselves."
"I promise to be quiet. I just want to see him for myself, that's all."
"All right," Lila said sternly. "But I'm serious about this. If you guys blow it and make noise, I'm going to call Jamie Peters on the telephone and tell him you were spying on him!"
On the other side of the lunchroom, Elizabeth, Enid, Olivia, and Dana Larson were having lunch with Andrea.
