We can easily recognize how these expressions can be translated into modern symbols: in the example on the left in Figure 7, Recorde adds the terms (10x2 + 12) and (4x2 + 8) to obtain the result (14x2 + 20) and, in the example on the right, he adds the terms (10x2 − 12) and (4x2 − 8) to get (14x2 − 20).

The multiplication of expressions can also be deciphered in modern terms, although its appearance, as shown in Figure 8, is at first more daunting.
