Chapter 4

A aliyah was glad when they finally made it to Historic Charleston in South Carolina because she’d needed a break from Bryant. A break from her aunt and Ben wasn’t going to hurt either. They’d decided to get hotel rooms in the downtown area, one for Ben and Sarah, and one each for her and Bryant.

She’d always been the type to love road trips, yet, after the strawberry farm, the large SUV had seemed extremely small and Aaliyah had no idea what had happened to make it feel that way. Mark and Tom had been amazing, and Aaliyah had been impressed by how great Bryant had been with Tom, who hadn’t seemed comfortable around the group at first.

One of Aaliyah’s nieces had autism, so she’d picked up on the signs from Tom immediately. Although she was still young, her niece had a hard time communicating, while, if one hadn’t been paying close attention to Tom, they wouldn’t notice he was autistic. She’d loved seeing him work around the strawberry farm, and it was even more touching to see how great Bryant had been with him.

Overall, Aaliyah had thought the stop was a much-needed break, but the tension between Ben and Bryant in the car when they’d returned to the journey was at an all-time high.

“This place is so beautiful,” Aaliyah said aloud to herself as she walked in the direction of the lights and music outside the hotel doors. She wasn’t much of a night owl, but there was no way she was staying in her room tonight when Historic Charleston promised to be much more fun.

“You shouldn’t be out this late by yourself,” a deep voice rang out from behind her. She gasped as she clutched her chest, caught off guard by Bryant’s baritone.

“You scared the bejesus out of me!” Aaliyah smoothed out her dress. “And I’m a thirty-two-year-old woman, so I can go out late if I want to.”

“Bejesus,” he repeated as he shook his head. “I didn’t mean to scare you. And what I meant was that it was late to be out by yourself in a different state. How about I walk with you?”

Aaliyah quirked an eyebrow. “You’re asking to spend time with me? On purpose? Are you sure you didn’t hit your head getting out of the car?”

“Ha-ha.” He looked down at her, his intense eyes making her swallow a gasp. “Can I take that as a yes?”

“Sure,” Aaliyah said. After a few minutes of comfortable silence, she asked the question she’d been wanting to pose for hours.

“Why was the car ride from the strawberry farm in Georgia to Charleston so tense? Did I miss an argument between you and your dad or something?”

“Or something,” Bryant said. “You didn’t miss anything. Benjamin Burrstone was just being his usual self when it came to me.”

“But I thought strawberry picking went well.”

“It did.” Bryant looked out toward the street as if he were reflecting on the strawberry farm. “My father’s attitude toward me had to do with my interaction with Tom.
