Hazy Hazing
Season: Fall
Seasonal Life Caption: Transitioning is Just a Fancier Word for Change
Mood: Brain boggled
I imagine most college freshman feel slightly overwhelmed when boarding the on-ramp to higher education. According to totally unreliable sources, common college anxiety issues may include a bubbly stomach, closing throat, pinch of confusionâpound of confusionâand an overall lost feeling. Of course, I have these issues 24/7, so, you knowâ¦yeah. However, when you combine said hurl-worthy vibes with the pressures of college, your brain constantly poses one very specific question with no hope of ever conjuring an answer: WTF am I doing here?
After nearly a month of being a newbie college student, I can confirm the accuracy of things like a bubbly tummy and ongoing lost feelingâ¦with one rather hefty difference from the average human freshman: at Mer-Nor U, no one was going for a degree in business administration or trying to achieve Phi Beta Kappa or Beta Gamma Sigma honors; not a single student was interested in becoming a doctor or lawyer; nobody was taking classes like pre-calculus, psychology, business law, or marketing. None of these courses exist at Mer-Nor U. Basically, our on-ramp to higher education has no off-ramp.
Instead, we travel along this unending on-ramp that happens to reside within a mer-palace. Okay, okay, it was pretty cool, apart from the sand crabs that deliver school mail to our dorm roomsâIâll never get used to their creepy little tip-tapping knocks and beady eyes ogling me as I carefully retrieve mail from their pincers. But, coolness factor aside, it was a little disconcerting to attend a university where the phrase âhigher educationâ has an entirely unknown definition and a class schedule that involved a mix of wonder and potential for bodily harm.
We start our days with Energy Transfers & Acquisitions. As a professor, Mrs. Waterberry was certainly one you would not want to test. Though fun and flamboyant in her teachings, Mrs. Waterberry made it very clear that she would not tolerate any shenanigans.
She spent most of the first month testing our powers, gauging our strengths, and exploiting our weaknesses, all to prepare us for today: our first time attempting energy transfers and acquisitions.
âEnergy Transfers & Acquisitions involves sharing the essence of your power,â said Mrs. Waterberry. âThere are three vital things you need to know about energy transfers. First, during a transfer, the sharing of your powerâs essence can make the recipientâs natural power stronger. Second, an imprint of your own power may remain with the recipient for a finite time, creating a damn near unstoppable force between you. And third, the benefits will only accrue if the energy transfer was willingly given.â
I couldnât help but wonder if this was what happened prior to the water challenge last year when Maile used her seeing power to project my mental image of Fairla for team Normals. During the water challenge, my eyes certainly highlighted pertinent parts of the clues and spotted the object I needed almost instantly in Mistâs Toy Emporium.
Gully, naturally, had a tough time with the whole concept.
