As you stroll along Via Francesco M. Penna, you’ll pass nice restaurants, trendy bars, and boutiques. Appreciate the frilly stone-and-metal balconies that jut out overhead. A couple of blocks down on the right, at #24, step into an antique farmacia (pharmacy) to appreciate displays of pill bottles and tonics from a different time. Just beyond at #34, Palazzo Spadaro offers tours of its lovely period interior, used in the Inspector Montalbano TV series as the detective’s office. At the end of the street, the deconsecrated church of Saint Teresa has an interesting display of detached frescoes in a fluffy Baroque interior.

Eating in Scicli: $$ Baqqalà serves up all fish, all the time, on its charming little urban terrace a two-minute walk from the pedestrian zone (Thu-Tue 12:30-14:30 & 20:00-22:30, closed Wed, Piazza Ficili 3, tel. 0932-931-028). With Via Francesco M. Penna at your back, cross Via Nazionale and bear right, then look for the restaurant on your left.

• To get back on the road, from Piazza Italia, drive south on Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi to SP-39, following signs for Donnalucata. The streets in central Donnalucata form a one-way loop; ideally drive along the loop closer to the water (Via Pirandello/Via Sanremo) and look for free street parking. You’ll find pay lots a bit farther out.
