CHAPTER SEVEN

It was decided that Clara would be living at Belinda’s until Roger was better or until she could afford to move. They were cramped in the small one-bedroom apartment, and Clara once again found herself sleeping on the couch. There were days when after fruitlessly searching the want ads she questioned her ability to compete in the business world, but she never doubted her decision to leave Allen. Clara hadn’t been able to make herself return to the hospital, but she called the nurse’s station twice a day to check on Roger’s progress. He was healing well. Just before he was due to be released, she tried to call him. He hung up when he heard her voice. She had tried calling Jamie numerous times at home, but either no one answered or Allen answered and told her Jamie didn’t want to speak to her.

She finally gathered enough courage to borrow Belinda’s car and go back to the house to pick up the rest of her clothes. She had been borrowing clothes from Belinda, but Belinda’s slightly smaller frame meant the clothes were tight and uncomfortable. When she got to the house, Clara was shocked to find her station wagon sitting in the driveway. Apparently, Randi had driven it back. For one wild moment she imagined Randi was in the house waiting for her. Rushing up the steps, she tried to unlock the door, but the key no longer fit. Allen had changed the locks. Luckily, her suitcase and the clothes that she and Randi had picked out in Corpus were in the station wagon. As she was transferring everything to Belinda’s car, she found the painting of the birds that Randi had wanted to throw away. For a brief moment she could hear the waves crashing and smell the salty air. Clutching the painting to her, she sat on the porch to wait until Jamie came home from school. He saw her and quickly walked on by the house.

“Jamie, wait. I want to talk to you,” she called.

He started running. Clara forced herself to breathe as she got into Belinda’s car and drove away. It was obvious neither of the boys wanted her in their lives anymore. That evening she sat on the couch and cried herself to sleep in Belinda’s arms.

Clara filled her days looking for work and reading the lesbian publications that were scattered around Belinda’s apartment. Her lack of job skills and work experience seriously limited her choices for employment, but she kept looking. Belinda had gradually convinced her to try writing articles for some of the publications she had been reading. Clara spent hours in the library poring over books on journalism trying to sharpen her writing skills.

A few weeks after Clara moved in, Belinda insisted Clara needed to get out and meet people and took her to a meeting of the local lesbian task force. Clara fell in love with the group and threw herself into it with an almost frantic determination. She was soon in charge of their monthly publication, the Rag.
