Time Signatures Greater than /16

Time signatures involving /16 are usually more complex than /8 or /4 .

13/16 , for example, can be divided in many ways. Here is an example of a beat in 13/16 :

Example 2g

The beat is divided into groups of 4, 4 and 5.

Here is another example where groups of 3 are used:

Example 2h

This beat is divided into groups of 3, 3, 3 and 4.

Time Signatures Greater than /4

Time signatures using notes longer than 1/4 notes are less common in modern music but the same principles apply.

3/2 tells us the bar is made up of three half notes . Half notes are equal to twice the length of 1/4 notes.

Three half notes = six 1/4 notes. By that logic, a bar of 3/2 is equal in length to a bar of 6/4 .
