Chapter 8
Taylor could tell that Tallahassee didnât like Rhys driving away in the truck solo, but Tallahassee slowly returned to her side, collapsed to the floor, and gave her a woeful look. She smiled, reaching down a hand to pat him. âIt would always just be us anyway, buddy,â she murmured. âGet used to it. Either that or you need to go with him, if you wonât be happy here.â
The dog just gave her a tail wag, curled up on the floor beside her, and fell asleep.
She wasnât even sure what to do with that, but at least it was some kind of an answer. Now all she could do was rest and wish that her post-surgical recovery had gone beyond this point, so that she wasnât quite so helplessâalthough that wasnât a word she would ever have used to describe herself. The fact of the matter was, right now she couldnât do a whole lot compared to what she used to do or what she wanted to do. Right now she could handle only just so much. And, with a note of exhaustion, she curled up on the couch and fell asleep.
When she woke again, the sunâs position already told her that it was afternoon, possibly late afternoon. She stared at the lowered sun before attempting to move because it would be painful. Anytime she got up after a long rest, it was beyond painful. But she didnât have a whole lot of choice.
She made her way back up to vertical, and, with a start, she sensed no sign of Tallahassee or of Rhys. She straightened and walked over to the living room window and looked outside. Rhysâs rental truck wasnât back. She let out a whistle, but it was hoarse and not her normal range. She tried again, and, with that, she heard a bark. She turned and followed the noise to the rear of the house, finding Tallahassee outside in the backyard.
âHow the hell did you get out here?â she asked and opened the back door for him. He bounded in and sniffed her all over, as if she had been gone. âIâm not the idiot that got out.â
A frisson of fear slid down her back, as she realized that somehow that door had been opened. Was it possible that Rhys had opened it? And left it open? She didnât think so. But maybe heâd come back and had seen her sleeping and had decided to leave her asleep, while letting Tallahassee out. That would be the last time she took painkillers in the afternoon. Sheâs slept for four hours.
Shaking her head, she quickly made a trip to the bathroom and then to the kitchen and put on coffee. She wished Rhys was back already, but four hours itself wasnât such a long time. Now if only he would come home and tell her that he had left the door open.
With the coffee on, she stepped into the fenced-in backyard and looked around. She found no sign
